Having trouble with the surname keep changing.Hope you can help me please. Walter Skidmore and Clara Shipley married march 1862 parish church wicker sheffield. Believe had 4 living children. 1870 Randolph Shipley Skidmore, Flory Dyson 1873, George Henry Skidmore 1878 and Alfred Skidmore Dyson 1880. Found them all on the various census.But never a father present.Mothers and childrens names kept changing between Skidmore and Dyson. Cannot find of any other marriages of mother. So how can I find or follow the true father (or is it the same man). All appears to happen around Infirmary Road Sheffield. My first message hope I have done this right.Thank you.

It might be a good idea if we had this moved to the appropriate board .. Yorkshire is such a big county and your query may well be seen by someone from Sheffield.

Hello Brendie.
I cannot help you with the "name change" but the following burials at Shalesmoor St Philips appear to be this family.
20th Aug 1892 Clara Dyson SKIDMORE aged 48 of 70 Woollen Lane
26th Jan 1891 Randolph Shipley SKIDMORE aged 20 of Woollen Lane
15 Dec 1867 Frank SKIDMORE aged 9month of Infirmary Rd son of Walter
20th Jan 1869 George Henry SKIDMORE aged 6+ of Infirmary Rd son of Walter.
FreeBMD have transcribed the age of Clara as "8" I have checked the original and submitted a correction.

hello
best way to start with a tricky one.
something strange going on here i think.
we know walter married clara shipley but looking at him on census he didnt seem to want to admit it.
1871 while clara and randolph are living with her parents,walter is lodging elsewhere mistranscribed as walk skidmore unmarried.
1881 clara still with her parents whilst walter still lodging elsewhere now claims to be a widow.
in 1891 clara is calling herself and children dyson and walter now claiming to be single.
walter was the son of william skidmore and mary cowin married 18/6/1834 so no dyson link there

I also found the same as hol regarding the census and looking at the addresses he was at the opposite side of Sheffield to where Clara was living.
This is possibly his burial 11th June 1892 Walter SKIDMORE aged 55 of 62 Amberley St Attercliffe . Tinsley Park Cemetery grave ZA93n.c.

I found them in 1841 in Sheffield at Watery Lane and although Alfred is shown as aged 11 in 1851 he is not listed with them in 1841.

So it looks as though they named two children George Henry. The second one is buried in Walkley Cemetery - the entry certainly jumps out at you...

Thanks for all the encouragement. The census info I have come across,but like you no father. Walters grave location is great.
I wonder if the link to Dyson could be the birth of Flory Dyson.Born July 1873 at 10 Cross Gilpin Street. Mother Clara Dyson formerly Shipley and father George Dyson. Reg.District Ecclesall Bierlow. Info I have got so far:
Randolph Shipley Skidmore -Father Walter Skidmore-Mother Clara Skidmore
Flory Dyson -F.George Dyson-M.Clara Dyson formerly Shipley
George Henry Skidmore -F.Henry Skidmore -M.Clara Skidmore form.Shipley
Alfred Skidmore - F.Walter Skidmore Dyson - M.Clara Dyson late Dyson formerly Shipman(think this should be Shipley).
The family tree we are following is George Henry Skidmore.
Upon marriage they all called themselves Dyson.
You can imagine I am really, really confused. Help,help,help I think.
