Ecclesfield PR lookup - 1815 marriage
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 03:21 BST (UK) »

Can anyone please assist with a marriage lookup.

William Platts = Ann Wragg (sometimes known as Nancy)
27 March 1815
Ecclesfield

Wondering if there is any hint of where this couple hail from, or any witnesses etc.

Many thanks.

Hello Ruskie

I was attracted to your post surname Wragg (my maiden name) and my family lived Sheffield Rotherham areas, cannot see a connection to my line though.

Looked on 1841 first to try to find them and see if born "in county" to give a clue before looking on 1851 for Birthplace this is what I found, hopefully may be of some help to you.

1841 @ Grenoside Ecclesfield Yorks
Nancy Platts  45  Independent   All born in County
John               20 Fork Maker
Joseph           15 Lab
Sarah             13
Benjamin        10

1851 @ Grenoside Ecclesfield Yorks

James Housley Head Married  35  Woodman        Born  Yorks  Eccledfield
Ann                  Wife                33                                                   "
William             Son                 14   Labourer                                  "
Joseph             Son                 11                                                   "
Jarvis/Jervis?   Son                   9                                                   "
Nancy              Dau                  4                                                   "
and
NANCY PLATTS Mother            58  Char woman                 "      Wibsey

Now there is a Wibsey near Bradford Yorks

Looked for a Death for William prior to 1841 Census
there were these two
William Platts Death Sept qtr 1838  Sheffield 22 349
William Platts Death Dec qtr   1839 Sheffield 22 408

Hope this is useful, good luck

Hi there Pam!

Many thanks for the censuses and your thoughts.

Yes, it IS me who is looking for Ann Wragg born Wibsey - I contacted you via PM a while ago to see if our Wraggs were connected.

The 1861 census gives Ann/Nancy's birth place as Wibsey Moor. She died 6 Sept 1868 age 75. I do have the censuses but I appreciate your help - it's very kind of you. Many related families from both sides of this union are living next door to each other on each census - so makes the finding a little easier  Smiley.

This question was an attempt to trace the origins of both Ann Wragg and William Platts. There are several William Platts around the area so I can't even take an educated guess as to his birthplace. I believe I have his death: "buried St Mary's, 4 Jan 1837 age 43", (he is "of Grenoside"), but thanks for the other deaths anyway  Wink.

My next course of action is to get to the LDS family history centre to order the film of the Wibsey PRs. I'd put that to one side, so think I'll get back to that now as I am a loose end at the moment.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi, I'm a different Pam to the one who has been replying to you but I thought you might like the following information:

In the census you found Nancy Platts [Ann [Nancy] Wragg living with her daughter - Ann Housley, formerly Platts. Ann was definitely the daughter of William Platts, born 2nd January, Wentworth, he was a forkmaker and died on 4th January 1837 in Grenoside. He was the son of John Platts and Ruth Howland. John was born 22 May Thryberg, Yorsks. John Platts was the son of JOhn Platts, born Thryberg and Mary Gilberforce, also born Thryberg. John was the son of Joseph Platts, labourer and Martha Cousin.
I have not yet found Nancy's birth certificate but also believe that she was born Wibsey.
You may have this information but I would be interested to receive a reply and also know if you have had any luck with Nancy[Ann] Platts

Hello Pam!

Firstly, welcome to rootschat!

I'm so pleased to hear from you! I believe you have taken my family back 3 generations! I didn't have any of the information you provided! This is wonderful!

I will send you a PM (personal message) about this family.  Grin
