Hello everyone, just visiting your excellent board from the Derbyshire board.

I'm looking for the parents of Eric C Burnley, judging from his marriage in 1916 I estimate he was born c1895 poss Truro, so if any of you kind people have a moment to spare I would be most grateful

I can't see him in 1901, nor can I find a birth 1891-1900 on FreeBDM - Have you found a birth? Do you have the marriage certificate - Could he be older? Born outside of England/Wales?

(Might just be my searching  Huh )

Blimey that was quick Grin  I hav'nt sent for marriage cert yet, thought I'd try this first, sometimes we get lucky, all his children were born Truro but he could have been born elsewhere, most of the Burnley's are in Yorkshire, looks like it's the Marriage cert route, but thank you anyway for your excellent service

Looking at 1891 census, the only BURNLEY mention is for people born: Burnley
Have you tried the OPC helper for TRURO who could check records
http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/t_z/truro.php

If you search at FreeCen for Burnley, 1891 it does show some sisters born cornwall, now Plymouth..thought it may be a possible lead for damily later
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

A 1901 census lookup would be a good idea for Eric, sorry I don't have access

He may have been in the Navy?

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline has only one hit for Eric Burnley - Eric Clement Burnley, b. 08 May 1895, Cape Colony.  You could download his service record, although it wouldn't give any info on his parents.

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action
also shows an E C Burnley of the right age making a trip back to South Africa in 1922.

Hi Jorose

That looks to be a very good find - may explain why I can't find a birth or census record. The marriage certificate - father's occupation may help to verify
Would there be a birth on the findmypast overseas birth records? I don't have access to same.

He would be on the overseas records in some cases - like if his father was in the military, or the family registered him with the consulate - but he could well be from a South African family, and signed up with the RN to see the world (or just for WWI?), in which case he'd only be in South African records.  Even if the family only temporarily moved to SA (intended to emigrate, didn't like the weather, came back), they would not be very likely to register him with the English authorities.

I don't see him in the overseas records at first glance.

Truro being so close to Plymouth I suppose he could well be a seaman of some sort

Truro has a port as well! He could have semi-settled down and just have been running boats between Truro and Falmouth or something. Wink
