Frederick was born in 1864 in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England and moved to Boston 6th may 1889. He married Joanna who was Scottish but that's all I have on her. Here are some details I have on Frederick...
Name: Frederick Crane Naturalized 9 Nov 1903 Name: Nan (Joanna?) Crane Naturalized 15 July 1901 Arrival Date: 11 Sep 1933 Age: 71 Years Estimated birth year: abt 1862 Gender: Male Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Ship Name: Scythia Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts.
In return I can help with any UK information. Thanks for any help. Kind regards Stephen Hibberd

Hello Stephen and a warm welcome to Rootschat
This doesn't answer your question but may help narrow things down - Frederick and Joanna seem to have been very newly married in the 1930 census (121 Auburn St, Cambridge, Mass). Their current ages are given as 67 and 63 respectively, and their ages at first marriage also 67 and 63 respectively.

Hello Anna. Wow that was a quick response and thank you for getting in contact. Yes they did marry very late in life and as far as I know Frederick was never married before. They had no children of course so this was the end of their line so to speak. Fred had two brothers also in Boston and they became very big in the building trade. But Joanna alludes me all the time... maybe one day i will find some info on her.
Thanks Anna. PS. if you need any lookups in UK, just let me know.

Stephen, the US Naturalization Index does not list any suitable person as naturalized on 15 July 1901, but there is a Joanna M. Cody naturalized in New York on 24 Oct 1900. Her birthdate is given as 16 Jul 1866 which fits with your Joanna's age in the 1930 census.
Other details on Joanna M. Cody: Former nationality: English (may just be American-speak for British!) Address: Reception Hospital N.Y.C. Occupation: Nurse Arrived at N.Y. 10 Feb 1887 Naturalized: US District Court, New York, N.Y. Witness: Julia M. Murphy, Matron, Willard Parker Hospital, N.Y.C.

In the corresponding outbound passenger list from the UK, Joanna's last address in the UK is given as "c/o Millar N. Whitehills Forfar". This may be a friend or relative of hers or one of her late husband (N.B. on the 1933 outbound passenger list their UK contact is given as Mrs Crane, Brechin, Scotland).

This is all fantastic news.
I believe her not to be Joanna Cody as Joanna Crane was naturalised in 1887. Now there is new info which depends the story.
The Cranes family originated and lived in South of England and no Cranes lived in Scotland apart from Joanna's family before she became a Crane in 1930, she may have had children from a previous marriage! So this Mrs Crane in Brechin Scotland is very intriguing.
So it seems that as soon as Frederick died she got her passport and came back to Scotland for a visit.
It just gets deeper! Many thanks for your help. Steve

I'm confused! In your first post above you said that Nan/Joanna Crane was naturalized 15 July 1901. Where does the 1887 date come from?

The Boston passenger list with the information from the original post says Frederick and Nan's passport was #7847, which matches with the information from the NY passenger list that I posted. It also says that Frederick was naturalized in the Third District Court in Boston and Nan was naturalized in the District Court in Boston, so that Joanna Cody definitely isn't a match. It also gives their address as 38 Fairmont St, Cambridge, in case that helps.

Oh! OK, so Joanna Cody's a non-starter.
I'm not easily finding other suitable Joannas pre-1930, though she must have been around somewhere
I think the more usual spelling at that time was Johanna. Or perhaps she's hiding somewhere as Nan.

I guess the only way is to order their marriage certificate. We have the year as 1930 and the place as Cambridge Mass.
So the next question is where can I order this???
This should solve it.

Johanna could also be listed in records as Johannah or Hannah.

Thank you so much for all your help. I only found this site today and have made more progress here in a couple of hours then in 2 years. I found a problem though, I just tried to obtain a certificate but I need to know the whole date I only know it was in 1930 and I cant continue without the complete date.
Thank you all so much.

On the application for the state of Massachusetts, it says if the date of the event is unknown, then you can give a ten-year period for them to search. Unless you have other information to confirm it, I wouldn't assume they definitely married in the town where they lived, so you're probably more likely to get the right information from the state.
