William Allen
« on: Thursday 12 June 08 20:06 BST (UK) »

William was my grandfathers brother, I have found a copy of a newspaper saying he was killed in
April 1914 in France - where would I find out how he died and what regiment he was in.  Around the same time the advert says my grandfather Horace was wounded (it says he was in the Scottish Rifles) how do I find out where he was injured ?   The family came from Goldthorpe and my grandfather later moved to Portland, Dorset why? and how did he meet my grandmother whol ived on Portland all her life ?

Look on Commonwealth war graves commission site for war casualties

I may have found your Grandfathers military service record

Horace Allen - Joined up into Kings Own Scottish Borderers and then was in 5th/6th Scottish Rifles D convoy -occupation Miner

he has a Gunshot wound to Neck and chest

reg no 17979

addresses of Dunns? St Goldthorpe and beaver st Goldthorpe are given

Could you give his date of birth?

If this is him, I will try and transcribe the records for you.

Who is to say where and how he met your grandmother ?

he could have met her while in the army , she could have been working in service near to where he lived -Im afraid you can only question family members and have a guess

Thanks Suz,

Grandad was born on the 20 Sept 1894 in Kimberley Notts and married my Grandma on the 29th Sept 1920 in Portland, Dorset.  I will have to see who I can find to ask about the marriage as sadly my Dad died in April and I have found some old photos and pedigree charts he startedwhich I would like to carry on with.

John Allen head M 37 Labourer in Iron works Dullingham Heath Cambs
Alma wife 36 Newbold derbys

John W son 9 Kimberley notts
Horace son 6 Kimberley notts

you mention  that the family were from Goldthorpe -do you mean the family moved there as Horace was growing up?

Hi Suz,

That's the family, the reason I say Goldthorpe is that I found a newspaper article in my late father's folder with the headlines "3 Goldthorpe Brothers" and in it states that one - William was killed, Horace (grandad) was injured and the other (John) was still in France.  I have no idea where the cutting came from (its only a photocopy) there is an address which I will try and decifer and let you have.
