NORRELL Family - marriages
« on: Friday 13 June 08 01:27 BST (UK) »

Hello,

I am having quite a bit of difficulty with my Norrell family who emigrated in 1850. Emigration details just list them as of Sussex.

By the look of the family who arrived I see 8 baptisms to William and Ann NORRELL, the first is in Eastdean near Chichester in 1815. These baptisms seem pretty good matches for my family. I do not have the marriage of William and Ann. Later baptisms are in East Lavant

The second part of the problem is on arrival William's wife was Jane. I have requested a 1841 lookup hoping to clarify a timeframe for a possible second marriage but at time of writing only parts of the family have been located

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=309606.new#new

Now The firstborn was William 1815. On arrival he had children - the eldest being 6. I have located baptisms for these 4 children (3 arrived one died aboard ship) in East Lavant. Births of his Australian Children list Mum as Mary GILBERT. Suzard appears to have located William already married in 1841. Then there is James wife Jane and a 1 year old son in 1850.

I have tried FreeBMD and cannot see them. Westhampnett should be the district and although there are marriages listed the wives are all wrong. I don't know if I am missing something. I do hope you can help me. If anybody can find any of these details I would be most happy.

William NORRELL=Ann/Hannah by 1815
Possibly a death for Ann NORRELL in East Lavant I guess sometime after 1833
William NORREL =Jane unknown - sometime after 1833 is all I can say at this stage as William and Ann's last child was born that year.
William NORRELL=Mary GILBERT given they appear to be married by 1841 probably around that time (first known birth 1844)
James NORRELL=Jane (Child born 1849)

Thank you for reading

William possibly married Ann MILES in Feb 1815 at Cocking, West Sussex. The IGI has two dates, one is probably Banns, the other the marriage. Will check the SMI later to see which one. One for 15 Feb 1815 is an extracted entry so is probably more reliable.

William snr married a Jane ABINETT or HAYWARD at St Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire on 18 Jul 1842 - extracted entry on IGI. FreeBMD has her as Jane HAYWARD, so she may have been married before.

William jnr married Mary GILBERT 23 Apr 1840 at St Mary's, Portsea - extracted entry on IGI.

There is also a William marrying a Hannah GILBERT 4 Feb 1833 at St Mary's, Portsea - extracted entry on IGI.

At a guess he married Ann MILES first, she died before 1833, and then he married Hannah GILBERT in 1833. She has died and then he has married Jane HAYWARD in 1842. There is a death on FreeBMD for a Hannah NORRELL in Mar qtr 1841.

The children on the IGI up to 1833 have William and Ann as parents. Jane in 1833 has William and Hannah

East dean and Lavant is very close to the Hampshire border, hence looking there.

Thank you very much Ian,

It hadn't crossed my mind it would be outside Sussex but your discoveries look really good. Some times we can't see the wood for the trees. It hadn't occurred to me to try Hampshire. I am not familiar with these counties. I am extremely grateful you thought of it. I had idly wondered if Ann and Hannah may have been two people but being those names are often used to describe the same woman I hadn't given it serious thought. I had seen the Cocking marriage and wondered if it may be the one I was after. Viewing the records could be my next step to see if William is listed as of Eastdean. Perhaps that was Ann's home parish. Thanks to you I have now ascertained that James Hayward married Jane Abbnett and they were the parents of Harriet Frances Jane, so that is wonderful. Father and Son married mother and daughter. It also explained to me who Harriet Frances Jane Norrell who married in Australia was. I had no idea. She seemed to be unconnected. All I had was the passenger list which listed her as Jane. Also the Frances aged 1, listed as son of James who died at sea was in fact a daughter. I had noticed the spelling was the feminine version.

You are very clever to work this out.  My sincere thanks

I couldn't see a burial for Hannah in East Lavant (Just seen she died Mar qtr 1841 in Westbourne district which doesn't include East Lavant so she must have been buried in Funtington will check that sometime)

Hope this is of some help in sorting the Norrell family.

Hello Jan,

How can I ever thank you. This is just wonderful. I am absolutely thrilled. So sorry for my delay. I have not been online at all. I am travelling at present so do not have my data with me but can't wait to get home and enter it all. I lost my husband in April and the family try to keep my busy constantly. I was just telling a nephew with a slight interest about this forum and went to show him the information I had received here only to find all this extra information. I should be home in 2 weeks. I am so excited to have this extra information. I was over the moon when Ian found the marriages in Hampshire. Silly me had not thought to look outside Sussex. Now all this information from you as well.

All the very best to you

James HAYWARD married Jane ABBNETT at Portsea, Hampshire 22 Sep 1828 according to IGI. Harriet Frances Jane appears to have two sisters, and a possible brother.

Jane ABNETT possibly daughter of Jeremiah and Harriet, christened Portsmouth, 30 Jan 1807, brother Francis and sister Harriot.
