Hello Rootschatters: This is what I know: James LONG married Mary RAMSHAW in March Qtr 1857 in Auckland district. I have found the family in 1861 and it shows the following: James Long, age 27, b. Cornforth Mary Long, age 23, b. Bishop Auckland Jane Long, daughter, age 3, b. Spennymoor Richard Long, son, age 1 month, b. Spennymoor Hannah Ramshaw, age 13 "visitor" (she is actually Mary's sister) I have found Mary Ramshaw in 1851 with her parents; I would dearly love to find James Long with his parents in 1851; per the marriage certificate, his Father is John Long, a laborer. The 1851 census is the only meaningful British census where I can get additional family information on James Long; he and his wife and children left for the USA in 1862, settled in Pennsylvania and he died several years later. Can any keen-eyed Rootschatter find James with his parents in 1851? Thank you kindly! Pat

Hi Pat
Having a look for you - can't spot anything as yet - but I had a look at the 1861 you mentioned, where they are living in Cornforth, Durham..... James was listed as a Coal Miner, b Durham, so he wasn't necessarily born in Cornforth.
What address did he give when he married Mary, and who were the witness' to the marriage?
Cheers AMBLY

Hi Pat
Will wait and see if we can track an address or a witness in the 1851/1861 Durham...
But, I just looked at the 1870 Census for them in North Fayette PA ? and that has James listed as born in Ireland.....
The passenger list for their travel to US in 1862, lists him as Jas LONG, country of origin : England. But not sure - if that would be birthplace or place of embarkation...?
Considering the conspicuous lack of any likely looking LONG or LANG on the 1841/1851 in DUrham area, Ireland might be right
He died before 1880, is that right (as I think Mary is remarried to MARTIN by then?) I wondered do PA death records have parents names on them from that time?
Cheers AMBLY
