Virus Warning - Advice needed Urgently Please
« on: Friday 13 June 08 14:36 BST (UK) »

For two hours I was away from my desktop computer. The only windows I had open were Rootschat and the BBC Family History message board.

When I returned I had two small windows on the screen. One was from my CA Antivirus telling me that it had quarantined C:\Windows\system32\wextract.exeand windows\SERVIC~1\i386\wextract.exe from an infection called Win32/Glenwiry.P

It also tells me that C\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\wextract.exe is infected.

When I vist the website of my antivirus software, they have no information on such a virus , and when I do a Google search I can find nothing on it either.

The other little window tells me that "Files that are required for Windows to run properlyhave been replaced by  unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.

Insert your WindowsXP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD now.

However, I do not have a CD for Service Pack 2. I downloaded the upgrade from Microsoft.

I do have the original XP CD however.

(I am now using my laptop, as I am unsure what I should do on the desktop.)

Can anyone give me any advice please?

Don't panic !

Read this - looks like lots of people have had the same warning, and it's not a problem after all  Smiley

wextract.exe  is a vaild Windows OS file.

I have this file in a number of locations and the most recent version is:

C:\Windows\System32\wextract.exe  64kb 14/04/2008

If you click on My Computer and then on the C drive and right click Windows and select Search and then search for the filename wextract.exe.

Although it appears in a number of locations, the one that is used is located in C:\Windows\System32.

The other locations should be folders called :

C:\Windpws\$NtServicePackUninstall$
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\long hex number

Thanks for the quick response, Nick and Downside. I have read the link, Nick, and it does reassure me, although I am still not sure about what to do. I have never had a virus warning before!  Undecided

I have the latest update of CA Antivirus, so take it the first step is to do a scan of the computer

Just  completed a full scan of the desktop with the very latest version of CA Antivirus.....nothing infected, nothing quarantined according to that.

Seems I got stressed out over nothing!  Grin  Grin  Grin

Thanks again, Nick and Downside......it is so good to have folks respond to requests for help like you both did.

still not sure about what to do

Ignore what CA is telling you.  Basically this a false positive and many anti-virus companies occasionally identify safe files or programs as bad ones.

There was the famous case of McCafee identifying excel.exe (Microsoft's spreadsheet program) as a virus some time ago.  McAfee then hurriedly released a new definition file, with excel.exe excluded from the file.
