Nothing in Minnigaff and there is just one mention of Broadfoot in Kirkmabreck:

Erected by a James McMichael of London in memory of his grandfather, James McCroskie, architect, Creetown, d. 30 Sept 1829, aged 78 and grandmother, Janet Broadfoot d. 2 Feb 1838 aged 77

Hi Gadget

I've been hoping to find an offer to look up an MI for the Parton parish and joyfully I have found your offer.

I was up in the NAS in Edinburgh this week to try to find out about my Parton based family members and came across a piece of information that was very difficult for me to decipher hence my request to find a possible MI for Parton/Corsock.

The period is for July/August 1843.  The Parton Kirk Sessions make note of the removal of the remains of someone who appears to have died in the Kelton parish.  The name is so bad it looks like Jam Miller but wonder if it is James Miller or Sam Miller  (In truth I had been hoping it would be transcribed as James Murray who died there in Green Lane in July 1843 but that would be too lucky).  There are two James Miller names in Parton for the 1841 census - one could be the younger James Miller who was residing at the Smithy lodge and would then be about 17 years in 1843.  This would also link in with the Green Lane smithy.  The other James is older and born in about 1797 and is an agricultural labourer I think.

Would you please look at the Parton/Corsock MI's in the remote chance that there was a James/Sam Miller buried there in 1843 - post July 1843.

Thanks J.A.

Hi J.A  Smiley

I'll certainly have a look.  It will depend on whether they had a grave stone, and not many ag labs did  Undecided

Parton is one of 'my parishes' - to the extent that my ancestors lived there (at Dullarg). There is a fantastic man who still lives in Parton. He is a mine of info on the parish. He used to be the Clerk to the Kirk Sessions and has masses of info. I'll send you details via PM of how to contact him.

Hi again

Nothing for the names and dates that you've mentioned. They were probably too poor for a monument.  Most of mine were too  Undecided

Thanks Gadget.

I had an idea that this would be the case.  This James Miller - if indeed that is who it is - has a brother Nathaniel who is living at Green Lane for the next census and so I wonder if both James' - Murray and Miller dying so soon after each other suffered from an infectious disease whilst working at the smiths - (my James was a blacksmith too).  No mention of it in the local papers though as I have already covered that investigation.  It looks as if the bricks in my wall are there to stay.

By the way my 2 x greatgrandfather's brother Samuel was at Nether Dullarg for a short period as a shepherd.  There is some information on the internet somewhere about a field on the farm not being plowed up for many years as it was believed to be cursed and anyone plowing it would die.  As a shepherd Samuel didn't get the chance even if he wanted to.

Thank you once again for looking anyway.

That info about Samuel is very interesting. Do you have full name and dates, please?

I was at the farm a few years ago and was given permission to wonder around the fields and take photos. It feels very remote, although not all that far from CD. My 3 x great was a tenant farmer there 1815-1832/3.

Hi Gadget.

Sorry I don't have any information it was just one of those snippets that I found fascinating.  I think I put in the words 'Nether Dullarg' into Google and I found it.  It looks as if it is a piece from an academic paper or a book and is an image of the printed article/chapter.  I know that the people working the land had been spooked by the curse as when someone did ignore the curse and plough they died very soon after.  The curse was eventually ignored and the field ploughed - the ag lab ploughing it survived to tell the tale.

I got the PM and address thanks.

I have been told by two separate people that my ggggxgrandfather Thomas McDonald (b.1773) died in Dalmellington, 3 May 1860 and is buried in Carsphairn churchyard (he had family there).  I have been unable to find a death cert. on SP to prove this and would be very grateful if you could check it out (along with any other McDonalds in Carsphairn).

Many thanks

Thanks for the offer Gadget

Is there anything for Richardson in Kelton (Castle Douglas) for the Richardson family. I am particularly interested in a Samuel who died c.1850.

Thanks

You are just a gem, Gadget! I would love you to look up the WILKINSON members buried at Twynholm. I went there in 1993 and shudder to think I didn't know what I know now. I was amazed at the comprehensive inscriptions- wishing and hoping!!

Thanks thanks thanks
