HI Monica,
I have tracked down Mary Handly in 1871 - she is back in Selkirk, and actually listed as Margaret. It is definately her though - age and occupation all fits, and she is listed as a widow, so this means husband William must have died between 1861 and 1871 - just can't find him, unless it is the death you mentioned, with another wife listed.....
