« on: Friday 21 January 05 14:04 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I've just found my great great grandfather, John N Bamford (Norton?) of Rothwell - born c 1840 - does anyone please have information on his parents? i've traced him back as far as 1881 (in London) - would really appreciate any earlier info out there?

Thanks very much

Thanks very  much, but this is a different john - mine was married to Elizabeth and ended up back in Rothwell with her in 1901. I get the impression from his chequered career (greyhound trainer, brickie, baker) that he was quite transient..

I'll keep looking..

Hi Amanda,

Here's what I think Roll Eyes

It looks as though John was married to Augusta first and abandoned her after 1871.

She appears in the next 3 censuses as married but with no sign of her husband.

Perhaps they were divorced and John later married Elizabeth - or perhaps they were just separated.

The "Royal" birthplace in 1871 would be a misspelling of "Rowell" which is what local people called Rothwell.

Also in 1881 John & Elizabeth have a daughter Jane who is the right age to be Augusta's daughter (she has no children with her in future censuses).

I can't explain Robert the son born in Hull - maybe John had both women on the go at the same time Shocked

John's occupation of baker in 1871 would fit with in later years.

This is all pure conjecture of course and could all be completely wrong Wink

It's something to think about though!

regards

Well, Byron, if what they say about us is true, and the wandering husband is a genetic phenomenon, then he's certainly fit, lol!

Thanks very much for your efforts, I think you're right - Jane ties into what we know about the family.

Cheers
