The website for Castles and Ancient Monuments in Great Britain contains a section about Walled Towns. www.britcastles.com/walls.htm
"Irish Walled Towns", by John Givens (published by The Liffey Press) tells the story of the historical development of the twenty towns which are in the Irish Walled Towns Network. http://theliffeypress.com/proddetail.php?prod=26-1&cat=7
Most interesting Christopher. Thank you for the information. I was borni n Coventry which was a walled town with twelve gates and twenty-two towers, though one would think that the twelve is actually part of the twenty-two. Two gates, Priory Gate and Cook St Gate still survive and a large section of wall that conmnected them survives. There are other short runs of wall too in Coventry if you know where to look for them. Charles 2nd had the walls of those cities that stood for Parliament demolished, which included Coventry and Gloucester. The Coventry Inner Ring Road outlines an area within which the city walls once stood. Thanks again for an intersting site.
