Hi
On the 1881 census we have relatives, Bennetts, living in a place called Ladynance in Cornwall. We visited it last summer. There are only 5 cottages there. Is there a way of finding out which cottage it was that they lived in? They had moved by 1891.

This is just a stab at an answer, but if there were only five cottage, is it likely from the occupation given for the "head of household" in the 1881 census, that they owned the cottage? If so, then it should be possible , with some effort, to get a look at the deeds for the 5 cottages and see if their name is on any of them. Someone in our family tracked down a house that way- bit laborious but he was in the RO{?} vicinity and had the time. Don't know how much it cost to do this. Not much help as an answer but can't think of any other way to come at it and given there were only 5 cottages it is feasible- maybe. Good luck

Thanks Charlotte
I was kind of hoping there was something really easy that I should have known about the early census's. It's never easy though is it?

Were any of the neighbours still there in other census years? The houses might be named then. Otherwise you can take a rough guess from the enumerator's route. Was he moving north or south for instance. Have a look to see what places are named and work on or back from them. Andrea

Correct.. it's never easy and once you get sucked in you can't leave the puzzle alone- means you brain dies from exhaustion which I guess is better than it atrophying.
What was the head of house's occupation? Might that give a lead?

Have you looked at the relevant parish records? Baptisms often say son of Fred of X cottage. If you are near an LDS centre (listed on familysearch.org) you can order the film to search there. Looking at the whole parish, rather than just your family, can pay dividends. Burials etc are most helpful and the vicar sometimes writes in little snippets that give the wider picture. If they were poor they might have been on parish relief, if rich they may be mentioned in the church magazines giving money. There are lots of sources available. Are there any books written about the area? A local museum? Andrea

Hi Thankyou for all these ideas
andrea have just looked up 1891 census and only 2 of the families are still there. Cottages are just called ladynance cottages. Interestingly there is a new family with name Bennett not a relation that I know of but small world!

Hi,
I've just had a look at the family on 1881 census on www.familysearch.org and clicked "next household". The Bennetts are in the end cottage.
Hope that helps.

Don't think they would have owned the house from census occupations. Following the enumerator's route and checking the surnames out against later census may give a clue if they were the only family in the 5 houses who moved.

Hi,
There's no comment "end cottage"; the household after the Bennetts has a different address!

Hi Nanny Jan
Are the census records then done in an order?
sorry to appear thick I am new to this!!!
So the first family listed would have been the first house on the row

Hi sjw,
The records are listed in the order of the route taken by the enumerator. It would depend which way round he went; but certainly one set of neighbours shares the same address and the others have a different address.
If you have a map of the area you might be able to trace the route taken.
