Hi all,
I have had great success thanks to your help since I last checked in.
Rebecca and Philipa did indeed marry brothers.
Stephen and Thomas Hefford were brothers and were two of at least 10 siblings.
Stephen Hefford and Rebecca Gummow had at least two daughters and one son. The son William, married at least twice as mentioned below. First Martha Ann Jesson in 1833, at least two daughters and one son, Sarah Ann (1834), Mary (1835), Arthur William (1837).
Second marriage: Mary Roach in 1847, having at least four children:
Elizabeth Roach Hefford (1849) Martha Gummow Hefford (1850) William Michael Hefford (1852) Lucy Hefford (1855)
However I have had less luck with Philipa Gummow and Thomas Hefford (1770) who married 24/07/1797 St Anne Soho (ext).
I can't find any offspring there and still looking for the Reynolds connection.....

Hi again
Cannot find anything further on Caleb
I wonder why William (who married twice) gave his daughter from 2nd marriage the middle name of Gummow, which was his first wife's maiden name?

yes Deb that is them, many thanks. I got a break in the 1851 Census. A Sarah Ann Hefford is staying (servant) with James (1801) & Rebecca Cheshire in Canterbury Place, Lambeth. James Cheshire junior (1827) married Catherine Gummow in 1850.
Hi again
Found this marriage on Pallots
Jas Cheshire = Rebecca Herford ..could this be a variation of the name HEFFORD? 1826, Whitechapel, St Mary

Just seen on IGI that Stephen Hefford and Rebecca Gummow/m did have a daughter Rebecca Hefford b 4 feb 1804 , Independent Market Harborough ,Leicester.
On the 1851 census ..Rebecca Cheshire is with James (1801), her children and Sarah Ann Hefford. Rebecca states she is 47 b Leicester, Harbro?. So b c 1804. This ties in really well. I looked for a Rebecca Herford/Hurford b 1804 leicester...there was none!
what do you think?

Deb hi,
this is great, a lot more progress made, all your suppositions appear correct. No concerns about William giving his daughter from the second marriage second name of Gummow, his first wife was Martha Ann Jesson, it was his mother whose maiden name was Gummow. In fact there may be a third marriage in there between Jesson and Roach.
The Heffords, Gummows and Cheshires are closely intertwined. As mentioned, William's mother was Rebecca Gummow. Rebecca's sister Philipa married William's uncle Thomas. William's sister, Rebecca, married James Cheshire. James Cheshire's son, James junior married Catherine Gummow, daughter of Michael Gummow and brother to Philipa and Rebecca.
Now James Cheshire junior's first son was named James Reynolds Cheshire. If you recall Mary Ann Reynolds was staying with James Cheshire in the 1851 Census. Michael Gummow also had a nephew Michael Gummow who went to Wales and his first son was also named James Reynolds (Gummow).
So my task is to determine the significance of the Reynolds name as it clearly has a significance.
I took another look at Pallots and there are five interesting Gummow marriages in London between 1788 and 1825, although strangely no baptisms. I know some of the Gummow contingent who later went to Wales were non conformist, would that explain that?
One of the marriages caught my eye:
James Reynolds = Mary Ann Gummow (St John Westminster) in 1823 at St Martin in the Fields (ext).
So I think Mary Ann Reynolds, widow, proprietor of houses, in the 1851 Census (ext) is actually Mary Ann Gummow. Annoyingly though, I can't find any offspring or any mention of her or James in the1841 Census.
Any tips on sources to progress this London Gummow connection further?
It looks like a branch of the family including William, Benjamin, Philipa, Michael and Rebecca moved to London from Cornwall sometime around 1778-1788 and then Benjamin, who was a welll known architect and worked on St Margarets Westminster and brother William moved to Wrexham/Cheshire around 1805, whereas some of the Gummows, including his brother Michael stayed in London.
Would love to get some more info on the London years,
best DC
