George BROWN was born in Rothesay in 1822 and was the son of Alexander BROWN, fisherman. George became a woollen warehouseman in London and then a woollen merchant. I think he was born George Brown and added the other forenames later. He also visited Australia and New Zealand in the course of his business. I am intrigued how he became a successful woollen merchant. Does anyone know about the woollen industry of Rothesay? I happened to notice there was a George HAMILTON of Rothesay, also born 1822, who was described as a merchant in the censuses. I wondered if George BROWN might have become associated with the Hamiltons and thus adopted their names? Does anyone know about the Rothesay woollen trade or the Brown family?

Hello,
George was the son of Alexander Brown and Mary Currie. He was born the 31st of January 1822 in Rothesay. Here's the family in 1861:
Address: Chapel Hill Tower House, Rothesay, Bute Alexander Brown, m, head, wid., 84, retired fisherman, Kilmodan, Argyllshire Catherine ", f, dau., unm., 55, housekeeper, Inverchaolain, Argyllshire Mary ", f, dau., unm., 52, housekeeper, Inverchaolain, Argyllshire George ", m, son, wid., 38, woollen merchant, North Bute, Buteshire Alexander ", m, nephew, -, 5, -, St James Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England Elizabeth W ", f, niece, -, 4, -, St James Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England
I think Alexander and Elizabeth are more likely to be grandson and granddaughter to Alexander senior.
Alexander died August 30th 1864, aged 87. He was the son of Archibald Brown, farmer, and Mary McKellar (?). Son George registered his death.
