George Lowther Hamilton BROWN
« on: Sunday 15 June 08 17:21 UTC (UK) »

George BROWN was born in Rothesay in 1822 and was the son of Alexander BROWN, fisherman. George became a woollen warehouseman in London and then a woollen merchant. I think he was born George Brown and added the other forenames later. He also visited Australia and New Zealand in the course of his business.
I am intrigued how he became a successful woollen merchant. Does anyone know about the woollen industry of Rothesay? I happened to notice there was a George HAMILTON of Rothesay, also born 1822, who was described as a merchant in the censuses. I wondered if George BROWN might have become associated with the Hamiltons and thus adopted their names?
Does anyone know about the Rothesay woollen trade or the Brown family?

Hello, Smiley

George was the son of Alexander Brown and Mary Currie. He was born the 31st of January 1822 in Rothesay. Here's the family in 1861:

Address: Chapel Hill Tower House, Rothesay, Bute
Alexander Brown, m, head, wid., 84, retired fisherman, Kilmodan, Argyllshire
Catherine ", f, dau., unm., 55, housekeeper, Inverchaolain, Argyllshire
Mary ", f, dau., unm., 52, housekeeper, Inverchaolain, Argyllshire
George ", m, son, wid., 38, woollen merchant, North Bute, Buteshire
Alexander ", m, nephew, -, 5, -, St James Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England
Elizabeth W ", f, niece, -, 4, -, St James Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England

I think Alexander and Elizabeth are more likely to be grandson and granddaughter to Alexander senior.

Alexander died August 30th 1864, aged 87. He was the son of Archibald Brown, farmer, and Mary McKellar (?). Son George registered his death.

I've found the MI for Alexander Brown and family in Rothesay.  I think it may be deteriorating.

Alex Brown ............. of Chapel Hill ............. Rothesay d 30 Aug 1864 aged ?7, wife Mary 22 May 1832 aged ?33, daughters Mary 9 Jun 1807 - 31 Dec 1896, Janet 1 Mar 1905 aged 95 (relict of Duncan Campbell), Catherine 4 Sep 1905 aged 100, granddaughter Elizabeth W Brown 21 Aug 1877 aged 21, son in law Wm Wynne 15 June 1873 aged 62.

Don't know if that's any assistance.

Dear Nell
Thank you for the MI in respect of Alexander Brown & family of Rothesay. This is of great help particularly because of finding the date of death of his wife Mary.
With kind regards
