There was so much industry in Mountmellick that it was known as "The Manchester of Ireland." Samuel Lewis' 1837 Topographical Dictionary of Ireland mentions a number of the occupations shown on the list below ...

Brewing.

Cotton weaving ... approximately 2000 people were employed.

Distilling.

Equestrian Equipment manufactiring

Embroidery

Flour Milling

Glue Making

Iron foundry

Potteries

The Royal Irish Beet-Root Sugar Factory founded at Mountmellick in 1851.

Soap Making

Tanning

Woollen goods were manufactured at the mills of Beales and Milner & Son.
