The mills of Slaithwaite
« on: Sunday 15 June 08 20:03 BST (UK) »

I´m looking for books on the above, or on the West Riding textile industry in the nineteenth century in general.

Great-great grandfather was a jenny piecer in Slaithwaite, so would like to read up about the industry.

Can anyone recommend some good books?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Aunt Sally,
no books but these look like nice sites as an introduction:

http://www.marsdenhistory.co.uk/work/mills.html

http://www.ckcricketheritage.org.uk/southkirklees/slaithwaite/docs/slaithwaite_downyourway.pdf

http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/IRwhitehead.htm

http://212.67.202.158/~hawklord/huddersfield/huddswool.htm

perhaps getting in touch with Huddersfield Library may be of some help

best wishes

Thanks for the websites Heywood!

And it would be great if you could note down some book titles, Sisterjane.  Even if there´s nothing on the mills, anything on local history would be welcome.

Thanks again and best wishes,

Hi Sally,

What timeframe are you looking for??

I think I found my Shaws of Slaithwaite on the following site for workers in cotton factories 1818-19.

www.galbthink.org/names/manfacdd.htm

I am not great at links, so just "g-----";

Carr factory of Robert garside and others and you will find it.

Thanks Trish, will try the website.

The spartacus website as recommended by Heywood is excellent - great eyewitness accounts by children and child piecers.  Well worth a look for anyone who is interested.
