M Inscriptions for Escomb
« on: Monday 16 June 08 18:52 UTC (UK) »

Hello again. Here is another gravestone surname list.
This time it is for  Escomb old Saxon Church and the cemetery on Hallimond Rd, Escomb.
The Old Saxon Church is in a lovely condition but Hallimond rd is  a disgrace. It is covered in bramble bushes and the only graves that one can get access to are  around the war graves.
I completed these in the winter time because that was the only time that it could be done.
The names with a w/m are the names from the war memorial
and the names with w/g are the single war graves..
As on previous lists, the names in brackets show they are on the same gravestone as the previous name.

Asquith wm, Atkinson, Aubrey?, Bailey w/m, Balmer w/m, Balmer w/g, Bell w/m, Bellerby, Biggs, Biggs w/m, Blades w/m, Blaire, Booth, Bowes w/g, Bowman, Bowness, Bracegirdle, Brown, Brunskill, Campion w/g, Casson w/g,  Chadwick w/g, Chrisp. In loving memory of Mary Ann Frances, beloved wife of William Brunskill, Huh 28/??/1920? aged 69 years.

Hello Roger. I understand. Hope these belong to your family because they give lots of information.

Sacred to the memory of Margaret Booth, wife of Benjamin Booth, who died 5/July/1820 aged 71 years.
Also the aforesaid Benjamin Booth, who died 1858 aged 92 years.
To the memory of Joseph Booth also of Escomb, Woodside, yeoman, youngest son of the above named Benjamin and Margaret Booth of Etherley, who departed this life on the 7th day of March 1815? aged 27 years.

To the sacred memory of Lancelot Booth of Etherley, who died June/14/1852 aged 64 years.
Also of Ann Booth, daughter of Lancelot Booth, who died March/31/1825 aged 6 months.
Also of Thomas Booth, son of the above, who died August/11/1839 aged 3 years and 7 months.
Also Ann Booth, wife of the aboveLancelot Booth, who died August/28/1856 aged 63 years.

In memory of Ann Booth, daughter of Lancelot and Rachael Booth, who died 30/April/1795 aged 71 years.

Here rests the mortal remains of Thomas Booth of Etherley, who died May/5/1848 aged 70 years.
Likewise to perpetuate the sacred memory and eternal hope of Jane Booth, late of Etherley lane, in this Parish and widow of the above named Thomas Booth(Yeoman) who departed this life on the 6th day of July 1857 aged 74 years.

To the memory of John Booth, farmer of Etherley who died January/11/1854 aged 71 years.
And of Elizabeth Booth, his wife, who died September/2/1854 aged 68 years.

This next gravestone is very weathered but some wording can be deciphered :-

Here lies the body of Elizabeth Booth aged 62 who departed this life March/21/1730.
The rest of the inscription is below ground level.

These gravestones and the church (7th century) are well worth a visit.

Thanks Adam.

Not sure they are mine but will look into them.

Went to Escomb a while back as have a few rellies buried there, with headstones as family remember going.

As you say the cemetery is a disgrace, i'd say 90% of the stones have been moved to 2 rows along the south wall.  They haven't been maintained so are covered in ivy, brambles etc.

Someone recently told me there was a list of the headstones, but the person who had it loaned it out & it was never returned.

Hi All

I have my g.grandparents buried there ..somewhere.

I've been up quite a few times .... but as you say...it's impossible.

From what I understand Wear Valley are still responsible for the graveyard....I sent them an email 22nd of May .... but no response.

I would also like to find a list of the burials if anybody has any ideas.

I was thinking of finding and contacting the vicar of the old Saxon Church to see if he can help.
I did get the key for the church from a house opposite the church but the person wasn't in, the key was just hanging outside.

Please PM me if anyone has any ideas ..... my last burial was 1901 ... so it's not that long ago.

i was also up there last year found my bracegirdle headstone in the mud against the back wall cleaned them down and re stood them up if i was from escomb i would be ashamed of the condition of the graveyard although properly not the village responsibility it wouldn't take much for the villiage to make it more presentable if a dozen got together and cleared the paths and cut and burnt the brambles

if any one want photo of cenotaph please pm me as i did take some

Hello Julia. This is an easy one. Man and wife by the looks of it. One is with an "S" other without the "S"

In loving memory of John William, the beloved husband of Mary Ellen Shields, who died July/15/1921 aged 52 years.

In loving memory of Mary Ellen Shield, beloved wife of the late John William Shield, who died July/21/1935 aged 58 years.
