I'm afraid this answer may confuse you even more, Caz - it looks blue grey Undecided  At least on my monitor.

Errr...it looks gray to me but with a lot of blue in it as well....not a true gray  Undecided

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_(color)

It's a lighter grayer version of the centre blue on wiki.

Here's a link to the National Museum of the USAF ... showing Eagle Squadron jacket colour; the photo is a little dark.

Aw well done.  I will wait until I get home to fix it though, because you are absolutely correct, I do need a new monitor at work as it really interferes with my restoration efforts  Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue, (and to think they have the audacity to think they pay me to work!!!  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin )

I  think Ken was in the R.A.F.  Unless I am mistaken the white blaze on his cap declares that he was a trainee.

I would suggest that Kyt might be able to help.

Hi guys

Good attempts at the colouring of the uniforms. However, they need to be a bit more matt.

Colour pgotos of the period would probably be the best comparisons (even though they don't show the "true" colours they would probably look best for this type of photo).

Have a look at these examples on the IWM:

http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/media/images/Photographs/Image/TR_001126.jpg

http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/media/images/Photographs/Image/TR_001127.jpg

http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/media/images/Photographs/Image/TR_001128.jpg

As you can see there are some variations in colour - this is due to both the number of times the uniform was washed and the country in which they were made. There were variations in uniform shades (RAF and Army) produced in Britain, Canada ad Australia.

And as David has said, the white strip on the sidecap indicates trainee (before promotion to Sergeant or Commissioning)

K

EDIT: ooops, in my scrolling I missed Saddles picture - that is a good effort

I've slightly toned down the blue in my earlier picture.

Thanks Kyt for info on uniforms , it's handy to have a few colour samples.

Hi  All,
Well, what a lot of interest Uncle Ken is causing!

First of all, thanks for the brilliant colour versions - they are all lovely. Which one is the most authentic I don't know.

He is English - RAF  and was put forward for a commission in JAN 1945. He flew as a rear gunner on 35 operational missions between 17-08-43 and 06-06-44.

Right, I'm now going to print them all off for him, then he can decide for himself which he likes!

Once again, thanks to you all for your work - I repeat myself regularly on this site, but I really do appreciate what you all do to preserve these old photos by making them of a better quality than the originals are in. Between you, you are helping to keep history alive.

   Cheers,    Pat.

I've slapped some on too, but will probably get my wrists slapped  Grin  for totally the wrong colours!

Cheers
Caz

PS Colours might need tweaking, can't tell on my work monitor!  SSshhh!!!

Also helps if you post the right one!

Hi Caz,

It looks blue/grey to me and just right!  But, I have a hunch that the buttons would have been brass!

He looked even better in colour!

Rabbit B  Grin

PS to Beard grandchild, you could always ask him what colour his uniform was?  If he is still OK and my Mother was at that age he will remember every detail vividly!   Wink

Lorryload of smelling salts en route to Rabbit.
Pat, what is the Eagle Squadron thing? I can't think how I know Ken was Bomber Command (Halifaxs), possibly a PM between us.
Maybe an Eagle was part of the Squadron badge of the unit he served with?
Cheers
