Hi
Was the 1851 census for Hulme, Manchester damaged? I cannot find the following family.
Thomas ASHTON born abt 1822 Hulme, Occupation should be plasterer Sarah ASHTON born abt 1822 born Hulme John ASHTON born 1847 Hulme and possibly Martha ASHTON born 1851 Hulme (she is aged 10 on the 1861).
They are not on the Ardwick, Prestwich, Salford, Deansgate or Manchester unfilmed 1851, I have checked.
Thanks Joan

Hi Barbara,
That's VERY interesting, I was wondering if he was married before Sarah, looks like he was.
Think I may have to purchase another birth cert, we may have two different mothers here
Thank you Joan

Welcome to rootschat Norman!
Thats exactly how I arrived on Rootschat, by googling my granny!
http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/Bookshop/index.html This link to the Manchester/Lancashire family history society tells you about the unfilmed census records - water damage records that have been transcribed and put onto CD in pdf format. So there are streets & names on them that don't show up on the main census collections. You can buy copies yourself from the MLFHS, or post a request on the Lancashire Lookup Request board for someone to do a lookup.
PMs are easy, just click on the little squiggly icon underneath the person's username & picture, top left of their post. Or click on their user name to go to their profile (which includes 'send personal message' option). Send me a practice PM if you like Youre doing well so far though, it took me 6 months to work out how to upload a photo
Cheers, Barbara

Or if you don't want to purchase a whole cd, you can do pay-per-view at www.familyhistoryonline.net for a fairly modest sum.

My technical terminolgy ("little squiggly icon") leaves something to be desired perhaps..
I should read the How to Use Rootschat section myself, been here 18 months now, about time I learned how to do things properly. Not your fault, I didn't realise that about five messages
Only the truly desperate come to me for techie stuff! But your PM got through in the end, so that bits now sorted
