Missing Ashton family in Hulme 1851
« on: Monday 16 June 08 22:22 BST (UK) »

Hi

Was the 1851 census for Hulme, Manchester damaged?  I cannot find the following family.

Thomas ASHTON  born abt 1822 Hulme, Occupation should be plasterer
Sarah ASHTON born abt 1822 born Hulme
John ASHTON born 1847 Hulme
and possibly
Martha ASHTON born 1851 Hulme  (she is aged 10 on the 1861).

They are not on the Ardwick, Prestwich, Salford, Deansgate or Manchester unfilmed 1851, I have checked.

Thanks
Joan

Wife is Esther age 25, born Hindle
Child is John age 2, born Manchester

also at that address are lodgers James and Mary Holland

Hi Barbara,

That's VERY interesting, I was wondering if he was married before Sarah, looks like he was.

Think I may have to purchase another birth cert, we may have two different mothers here  Roll Eyes

Thank you

Hi Joan & Barbara.
John Ashton, son of Thomas and Esther, was my great grandfather.
I have also been searching for them on the 1851 census.
I had found the address 45, Phoenix St, Hulme, on John's birth certificate so I typed that address in Google and you can probably imagine my amazement when I saw the first entry:- Missing Ashton family in Hulme 1851.
I am new on this site and have not yet worked out how to send pms (personal messages)
I am puzzled by Joan's reply refering to;-  the unfilmed census   Cheesy
My census research has mainly been done on Ancestry.com which is available at our local library. Perhaps you can advise on where I can see or acquire a copy for my records of the entry refered to stating that Thomas had entered Warrington as his place of birth.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers,
Norman Ashton

Welcome to rootschat Norman!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Thats exactly how I arrived on Rootschat, by googling my granny!

http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/Bookshop/index.html   This link to the Manchester/Lancashire family history society tells you about the unfilmed census records - water damage records that have been transcribed and put onto CD in pdf format.  So there are streets & names on  them that don't show up on the main census collections.  You can buy copies yourself from the MLFHS, or post a request on the Lancashire Lookup Request board for someone to do a lookup.

PMs are easy, just click on the  little squiggly icon underneath the person's username & picture, top left of their post.   Or click on their user name to go to their profile (which includes 'send personal message' option). Send me a practice PM if you like
Youre doing well so far though, it took me 6 months to work out how to upload a photo Roll Eyes

Cheers,
Barbara

Or if you don't want to purchase a whole cd, you can do pay-per-view at www.familyhistoryonline.net for a fairly modest sum.

Thanks Barbara for your reply.  I was puzzled by your instructions for sending PMs as I couldn't find the squiggly icon you referred to. I checked the section on "How to use Roots Chat" and found that newbes like me can't see the red scroll until after we have sent five messages (to reduce spam being sent by newcomers)

Apologies for the mess in my previous message.   It looks as though my next lesson will be in the use of smileys.
Cheers, Norman.

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

My technical terminolgy ("little squiggly icon") leaves something to be desired perhaps..

I should read the How to Use Rootschat section myself, been here 18 months now, about time I learned how to do things properly. Not your fault, I didn't realise that about five messages  Roll Eyes

Only the truly desperate come to me for techie stuff!
But your PM got through in the end, so that bits now sorted

Thanks to all of you who have offered me assistance on this page and also by PMs especially in respect of lookups. I have not doubt I shall have to take one or more of you up on the offer.
Cheers,
Norman.       Grin
