My GGG grandfather (John Rowe b. 1805 Ruan Lanihorne, Cornwall) spent two years in the West Indies during the late 1830s, before returning to Cornwall for two weeks to get his family and move permanently to Australia. I am trying to find out what he would have been doing in the West Indies and why. He was a miner by trade.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? I was thinking whether any Cornish newspapers had advertisements at the time asking for men to go to the West Indies for specific reasons. Any other ideas greatly appreciated.
