Ship passenger lists Ancestry and findmypast
« on: Monday 02 June 08 16:04 BST (UK) »

Hi

On Ancestry I have discovered a probable relative arriving in New York in 1956. The only information for both he and his wife are the number of bags that they had with them and that they were en route to Canada. (fits in with family rumour).

I have also found him in the passenger list index on Findmypast. The index shows a date of birth as 1927.

Would I be right in believing that the findmypast data (I don’t have access) is the passenger list on departure? If so what other information could I expect. Is the year of birth just derived from a given age?

Hi Simon

Yes you are right in believing that findmypast gives you details on departure.  The information is as follows:
Person
Date of departure
Port of departure
port of destination
date of birth (cacluated from age)
age
sex
occupation

and ship details ie name of master

If you have details I could do a look up for you

Hi Kerry,
Is the information on find my past taking directly from the passenger lists?  I have the passenger list for my Walter Bone on the Emerald, June 14, 1836 and I think it is from Liverpool to W. Canada.  I don't see ship details.  The whole group has names listed although I think some of the ages are wrong, including Walter himself.  Is there more information available?

Hi Peggy

The FMP passenger lists are different to the one you have information from as they only cover 1890 - 1960. They are from the National Archives and are scanned images of the passenger lists handed in to port authorities wehn the ship left the UK.

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for the information. If you could do a lookup for Dennis and Ann Backhouse 1956 from Southampton to New York, I would be most grateful.

Thanks

Simon

I'm going to PM the details to you because the Mods don't like information published about people who potentially are still alive.

Kerry,

Many thanks for the information. This is a lost relative who we also believe changed their name when settling in Canada (In Canada, backhouse refers to the smallest room in the house I believe), which certainly adds to the challenge.

Iria,

Although I already have this information, thanks for taking the time to look up the New York arrivals.

Simon

Glad it helped and a good reason in that case to change their name! Grin
