Would anyone be able to find for me please Joseph Betteley on the 1861 Census? He died in 1866. On the 1851 census he was a retired ironmonger/widower living at Oakfield in the township of Stapeley in the parish of Wybunbury, Cheshire. Joseph was born in 1791.
having great difficulty finding him but i have found this- sarah ann betteley married edwin swinfen bellyse 30th sept 1852 wybunbury cheshire.brides father joseph betteley and grooms father john bellyse.brides age 28yrs and grooms age 30 yrs. this looks like them in 1861- living in nantwich cheshire edwin bellyse 40yrs m.d practising as family practitioner (with lots of letters next to it lol) born audlem sarah.a 38yrs wife born liverpool lancashire edith.a 7yrs daughter edwin 4yrs son + 1 gouverness and 4 other servants didnt she marry well? i can definately say that he is NOT in stapley in 1861 as ive just been through every page in the parish.i do see what looks like his brother richard and family but no sign of joseph regards alli

Thank's ever so much for all this info. I really appreciate the time you have both spent looking for me. I had looked on Ancestry (library version) too but just couldn't find him there. Thought I was doing something wrong.
Joseph Betteley married Ann Harrison at Wybunbury in 1820. Her father is the chap who we think built Oakfield House in the late 1790s. All the evidence I have seems to suggest that both families were of humble origins who'd made there fortune through forging/ironmongering.
