TIPS and LINKS for searching in Switzerland
« on: Tuesday 17 June 08 13:56 BST (UK) »

Hi
I have done so much research on my side of the family in Dorset and Wiltshire and after
We have been visiting family in Switzerland.
I would love to find out about my husbands side of the family
tree. Is there anyone who may know if they had 1841, 1851,1881, or 1891 census records in Switzerland?
If so how can I search them?
Or do any of you know how I could start to look the births marriages  up.
Kind regards Christine

Swiss records are said to be excellent but you need to start reading about what records are available and how to use them. You can start with the link below and also check out what's on LDS site (www.familysearch.org).

Hi Christine

In Switzerland don't exist any census records.

Can you tell me the surname you are searching for
and where they came from in Switzerland?
(place name or at least the name of the canton?

Who did emigrate to the UK and in which year?
Do you have the naturalisation record?
What is mentioned there about the origins?

In Switzerland civil registration offices have
documents from 1874 until today. Before 1874
you can search in the churchbooks, most of them
are hold in the state archives of the cantons.

For researches in Switzerland it is important to
know the place of citizenship of the people you
searching for. On this place you can search in the
books of citizens, there you can find whole families.

Kind regards
Svenja
