Hi, So i have decided to research my family tree and have already hit a brick wall tracing my grandmothers line. Her parents are listed on her birth certificate as Edith Kate Heather a domestic servant in Ide's cottage Sompting. Father being George Frederick Hough (They dont appear to have been married at this stage...if at all... cannot find any record) He is listed as an ice cream salesman??
I can find no record of the cottage....nor any record of a marriage. I have found Edith Kate Heather but no records of George Hough (interestingly on my grandmother Alice's marriage cert her father is listed as George Heather...is this unusual??) I beleive he was a soldier at some point and was dead at the point of my grandmothers marriage in 1953. Unfortunately my grandmother is dead so i cannot ask her.
If someone could help in any way i would be eternally gratefull

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat
I would imagine your Grandmother gave her father as George Heather rather than Hough for proprieties sake - illegitimacy would still have been a stigma in the 50's. Finding George Frederick is going to be tricky as if it is true he was a soldier he could have been born anywhere. Starting with Edith Kate's birth certificate and finding out as much you can about her and her family would seem your best bet.

Hi
Have a look here
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,290.0.html
Lots of links to useful sites
Also this site would be worth a look to see if the Ide's Cottage is marked on an old map of Sompting

Good luck

Hi there,
Unable to sleep so surfing web and came across your messages re Edith Kate Heather. She is/was my great aunt, born 10th June, 1910 at Holden Cottages, Broadwater Street, Broadwater, Worthing, Sussex. Parents: Henry James (Harry) Heather & Kate (nee Pellett). Harry & Kate were first cousins, both born Petworth in Sussex. Harry was for much of his working life a bricklayer's labourer/bricklayer. Between Edith Kate's birth and 1914, the family moved to nearby Sompting and lived for a number of years at Ides Cottage (now sadly demolished) in West Street. It adjoined a small general store on north side of West Steet, almost opposite Orchard Cottages (also now demolished), where my grandfather, William Heather & family lived for many years and where my father was born.
I have been into genealogy and family history for some years now and can give you more info if you wish. I have on my computer a copy of a postcard with picture of Ides Cottage, which also includes my grandfather, although his face is turned away from camera, and better image of Edith Kate as a girl + younger brother, Ernest (Ernie). I shall try to include this as an attachment with this message. Never used this site before. Sorry, site says the file is too large!
Hope to hear from you soon. All the best!

I have Sussex Heathers too. My 2x g/grandmother was Harriet Heather born Pulborough about 1800 to James and Ann (Greenfield). I can trace back to Thomas and Elizabeth (Richards) born c 1723 and most of them seem to be around the Pagham, Pulborough, South Berstead area Any use? Redlion, who was Henry James father please as I have several bricklayers in these families? Sylvia

Hi Ladybird,
Just read your message. However, from the info you have posted, yours would appear to be a different family. At least, any connection would need to be way back prior to mid 1700's. To answer your question, Harry was the son of Lucy Heather (1848-1883), who in turn was a daughter of James (1812-1883) and Mary (nee Matthews) (1815-1886). They all lived at Petworth, Sussex, although Lucy later spent time in Brighton and Eastbourne.
Hope this helps- redlion77

Hi Redlion 77
Saw your posting about the Heathers - this is also my family on my mothers side so would be very pleased to share any info you have with you - I'm at work at the moment so scant details to hand but will send some through.
Henry William Heather born 1860 (son of James Heather and Mary Matthews) married Margaret Winifred Parker born 14/6/1867 at Gosport, Hants. She was the daughter of Emmanuel Parker born 1/10/1824 in Compton Chamberlayne, Wiltshire, who I believe died in 1884 in Gosport, Hants. He was a Royal Marine.
Henry William 1860 and Margaret definitely had a son called Henry William born 31/10/1888 at 3 The Hollies, Stoke Rd, Gosport, Hants (my grandfather) but according to the 1901 census there are also other children – Margaret W born 1890, William Henry (Bill) born 1894 at Fittleworth, Ellen Elizabeth (Nellie) born 1895 at Fittleworth, James born 1897 at Petworth, Florence Daisy born 1898 at Petworth, and Emily Elizabeth born 1900 at Petworth.
Henry William HEATHER b 1888 married Constance May BAKER born 1896, Woodford, Essex. She was the daughter of Edward Baker born 1870 in Chichester and Mary Jane Herrington born 1873 at Petworth.
sounds as if this is also defintely your line - maybe we could correspond directly
Hope to hear from you soon - how exciting!
Best regards
