Marriage look-up, Edgbaston
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 09:06 UTC (UK) »

If anyone is visiting Birmingham Record Office, would it be possible to do a marriage look-up?
On the 1891 census, Florence Ryland is living with her mother at 11 Spring Vale, Edgbaston, Birmingham.  She married Thomas Harrison in Sep Qtr 1900 reg Birmingham.  I am reluctant to send for the certificate because I don't know if the Thomas Harrison is the one I'm looking for.  It would be great if someone is able to do this.

Hi Lorraine

There's no way of "looking up" a marriage without purchasing the marriage certificate - unless what you mean is a look-up in the parish records, which isn't possible unless you know which church they married in.  It might even have been a civil marriage or a non Church of England religious marriage.

Do you know for certain that Florence married Thomas Harrison, as opposed to the other bridegroom on the GRO page (Arthur Frederick Glover).  Have you found the couple on the 1901 census?

If you know something about the Thomas Harrison you are looking for (such as his father's name) you could order the certificate on a "checking" basis, so that you would receive a partial refund (and no certificate) if the details don't match.

according to the 1901, Thomas and Flo are in Bedminster district of Bristol (clinched by M-In-Law Mary Ryland's presence.

1901 -   RG13/2364; Folio: 78; Page: 10 - Bristol, Bedminster
60, Green Street

Thomas Harrison 26  Head Publican born Lincs, Ganeboro (prob Gainsboro' ?)
Florence Harrison 26  Wife Birmingham
Mary Ryland 52  Mother in Law Worcs

Louisa Ford 40  Visitor
Louisa Ford 18  do
Dorothy Ford 13  do
Gladys Ford 9  do

The only Gainsboro' related candidate seems to be a lad born 1873/4 in Scotter - mother Harriet. By 1891 he's a Blacksmiths apprentice tho ....

I'd go with Anna's advice and get the Marriage Cert to remove all doubt ...

Thanks for the replies.
It is the family on the 1901 census, but the Thomas Harrison I am looking for was born in Morton which is part of Gainsborough.  I am thinking that because he was a long way from home, he said Gainsborough because it was the bigger place.
I did mean the Parish Records, sometimes people have Cd's or marriage indexes or are looking at the record office for something in that area themselves.

Yes - this is the one.  I've done all my research from local parish registers, and I know the family all lived in Morton, George Harrsion  (Tom's brother) on this census was my grandfather.

Now I want to be able to confirm that the Tom Harrison from the 1881/1891 Morton census is thesame as the one in Bristol!!
