COMPLETED Jane Watson b.1837 Cromarty d.1905 Kirkhill, Inverness
« on: Wednesday 18 June 08 11:58 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find more information on my ggGrandmother and her parents. From Jane’s death certificate I have found out that she was born in 1837 in Cromarty, Parents names are John Watson and Jessie Fraser, John was a carpenter, informant was son James. I have hit a huge brick wall trying to locate Jane and her parents.
In Inverness on 7 March 1864 Jane had a son James, illegitimate but father’s name on birth certificate is Archibald McLellan, who was a Tailor.

On the 1871 Census Jane is showing as age 37 and James is using the name McLellan, they are at Druid’s Temple Labourer’s House, Croy & Dalcross (This is actually classed as Inverness now).
By the 1881 Census James has started to use his Mother’s surname Watson.
Strangely, when James got married in 1889 to Agnes Clark in Glasgow he gave his Grandparents names as his parents but instead of giving John Watson as his Father he gave the name James Watson, Tailor.

Would be very grateful for any information/help at all on John/James Watson and Jessie Fraser.

I'm still getting nowhere with this one, I went to Cromarty Courthouse on Saturday and had a look through some of the records in a cupboard in the corner of the first room you go into but haven't managed to crack this one yet.

From the info I have below Jane's birthdate could be anywhere between 1828 and 1837. Then again her parents names could be anything as the only place I have their names from is Jane's death certificate - informant was son James, we already know he told porkies on his marriage certificate. James was also fond of a drink or two which could well have clouded his "memory" a bit. Maybe Jane was outcast after having an illegitimate son (not unheard of in those times) and James grew up not knowing his grandparents therefore not really knowing their names.  Roll Eyes

The one thing that is constant from the census records is Jane's birth place of Cromarty - and her name.  Wink

On the census of 1871 Jane gives her age as 37, this would point to a birthdate of 1833/34

On the census of 1881, Scotland's People shows 1 Jane Watson in Druids Temple, Inverness, born in Cromarty aged 51, this would point to a birthdate of 1829/30

On the census of 1891, Jane is at Druid Temple Cottage, Croy. Scotland's People shows an age of 62, this would point to a birthdate of 1828/29 (This age has been scored through on the census sheet along with most of the other ages on this sheet)

Jane was living with her son James Watson and family at Lentranhill, Kirkhill at the time of her death, her age was given as 68, this is the only thing that points to a birthdate of 1837.

Help......please

Hi Judi,

Thank you very much for your help, it's much appreciated.

This family look lovely and would fit in so well with the dates and names.

I have had a look at IGI and there is a marriage for James Watson and Jess Alexander on 17 FEB 1827 at Fordoun, Kincardine, Scotland so Hellen Alexander on the 1841 census would be Jessie's mum.

Here's a wee thought to throw into the mix.......

James Watson, Jane's son married Agnes Clark, their first born daughter was called Mary (after Agnes' mum), their first born son was called Alexander - we can't work out where Alexander fits in. Their second born son was called Francis (Frank) (after Agnes' dad). Their second born daughter was called Agnes (after her mum). Their third born son was called James (after his dad). We have also found evidence that a Jane was born and died in infancy, this would have been their second born daughter. All this seems to fit in with the Scottish naming pattern apart from the Alexander.

Why then was it not until their 10th child (6th son) that he was named after his paternal Grandfather, the illegitimate James' father - his full name being Archibald McLellan Watson, this was my grandfather.

Or maybe I'm just clutching at straws here and all this means nothing at all.

Oh I wish I'd questioned my grandparents more when they were alive but I'm 3 years too late.

Judi,

Just what I was thinking myself, I'll do a bit more digging.

Many thanks for your input.

Right I've done a bit more digging, see what you think about what I've come up with.  Smiley

On Scotland's People I ran a search on the 1861 census on all Watsons of both sexes aged between 30 and 43 in Inverness, mainly because Jane had her son James in Inverness in 1864 and she also lived for the rest of her life in Inverness. I found her on the 1901 census aged 70, still living at Druid's Temple and living on an allowance from friends.

I came up with a Jane Watson aged 35 living with her brother Alexander Watson aged 32 who was a widower and his son Hugh aged 3. They were living in Gilbert Street, Inverness and Jane's Occupation is showing as a Servant.

On Jane's son James' birth certificate her address is shown as Nelson Street, Inverness - this is a stones throw from Gilbert Street, only round 2 corners. On the same certificate Jane's Occupation is Domestic Servant.

On the census Jane and Alexander's birth place is showing as Lochbroom, Ross & Cromarty. On checking the 1841 census on FreeCen I find an Alexander Watson aged 11 with his parents John and Catherine Watson in Ullapool, Loch Broom, Ross-Shire - John is a House Carpenter.

I've also found a Jane Watson on the 1841 census in Ullapool, Lochbroom, Ross-Shire aged 16 with a McRae family - her occupation is Female Servant.

I can find a birth on IGI for Alexander Watson in 1828 in Lochbroom, Ross-Shire, no mother listed but Father is John Watson. I've also found 4 siblings all listed the same way. No Jane though. There is also a Dorrathie on the 1841 census, I cannot find a birth for her on IGI either.

Do you think I've managed to find the right Jane and her parents or do you think I should keep looking........I feel like Lloyd Grossman here - "Let's look at the evidence...."  Grin
