McLeod - Nova Scotia
« on: Wednesday 18 June 08 13:12 BST (UK) »

Would love to learn more about the parents and siblings of:

Sarah Ann McLeod b c1848 Halifax Nova Scotia.  Her parents were William and Jane (nee Watson) - no dates I'm afraid.  William was a captain in the Merchant Service.

Sarah married Henry Arthur Jenkins 13 April 1869 in Halifax.  (I know all about Henry - he was born in Wiltshire and served in the Royal Engineers)  Their first child Marion Elizabeth was born 13 March 1870 in Halifax.  The next two children Wybert J O and Flora L were born in Edinburgh in 1876 and 1877.

Henry died 1 June 1878 in Edinburgh from hepatitis.  On his death certificate the informant was William McLeod brother in law on board Sarah of Liverpool.  Sarah also had a sister Elizabeth Bethia b1854 in Halifax.

Sarah died 30 November 1898 in Edinburgh.  She lived with her sisters after she was widowed in Edinburgh.  In 1891 a Gertrude McLeod b1883 in Boston Massachusetts comes to live with them.  Who does she belong to?!!!

Please can anyone give me any ideas how to find out more.

May be able to help as I am related to N.S. McLeods.

Henry [Jenkins] died 1 June 1878 in Edinburgh from hepatitis. On his death certificate the informant was William McLeod brother in law on board Sarah of Liverpool. Sarah also had a sister Elizabeth Bethia b1854 in Halifax.
The above detail may be very significant. Could you clarify the portion in bold while i go through some files. Is it that William McLeod (how do you know he's Sarah brother?) gives his residence on board a ship named Sarah from Liverpool?

Hi aghadowey

I'm afraid I jumped to conclusions regarding William being Sarahs brother in law.  Am attaching copy of Henrys death reg.

William could have been either Sarah's brother or her brother-in-law if her sister married a McLeod.

It is possible that the Liverpool on the death certificate refers to Liverpool in Nova Scotia not Liverpool, England. The McLeods of Queens County were ship builders, ship owners and sea captains for generations. Will do a bit more searching and come back later.

Found Gertrude McLeod in 1901 census:
41 Marchmont Crescent, Edinburgh
Bethia McLeod 40 Canada dressmaker
cousin Gertrude McLeod 18*
+ 2 boarders

* Ancestry has: (Brechsh Subyer) Midea States of America, Perfume Linisher (wholedle chemests) which I take to be (British Subject) United States of America, Perfume Finisher? (wholesale chemist)

Wonder if Gertrude married or died in Scotland and what information might be on the certificates?

According to my OH Gertrude didn't marry and died before 1968.  Looks like a look up on Scotlandspeople.  Will let you know what I find - hopefully it will give her parents.

Just had a horrible thought- 'Freder' is probably the index's shortened version of a name like Frederica.
