given the availability & choice of a Birth or a Marriage certificate; which is best to assist in regressing through ones ancestors?

Thank you.

My choice would be the marriage certificate as you will get both fathers names plus their address of abode, ages and hopefully witness's which could be a brother/sister or relative.

Hi,
Assuming you mean England and Wales civil  reg certificates, or Irish civil  reg certificates , my answer would be both, but if I had to choose only one of the two for money reasons etc , I would  definitely choose to order the person's  birth cert over their marriage cert : My reasons being :

The marriage cert of the person will not show the mothers of the bride or groom, only the fathers names - so a marriage cert is no good for tracing the maternal lines of the bride and the groom  only the paternal like, unlike births certs, which will give you both the father and the mother names

The fathers  of the bride and groom may not be correct on the marriage cert. In many cases the bride or groom will make up a name for their father , if that person doesn't know who their father is, or if that person is illegitimate - I have a couple  marriage certs myself where the father's name is  made up and does not exist- the person being illegitimate. If I had never obtained the birth certs of these people, I may have believed the fathers names on the marriage certs were their fathers - a  wild goose chase.

Also , occupations can be totally incorrect too. The information on marriage certs are only as good as the information given by the bride or the groom . Not to say birth certs are 100% accurate all  of the time in regards to the fathers , but I think the information given is much more likely to be  more accurate than marriage certs

Kind Regards Smiley
