Hello Folks, I wondered if there was a way to find out the husbands name: Marriage 2nd qtr 1865 Orsler Mary Poplar 1c 1152 Mary was born 1824 in Parham, Suffolk. I don't seem to be able to find her in any census returns other than 1841 aged 15. I wondered if she had been married before 1865 and just used her maiden name to re-marry. Mary is quite a distant ancestor and I do not really want to have to buy the marriage cert. It would just be interesting to know where she disappeared to !! Regards Brenda

Hello Brenda
There's a mistake in that transcription; the GRO page shows clearly that the reference is Poplar 1c 1132.

Using the corrected reference, the possible bridegrooms are Joseph MEAD and Benjamin SMITHERS (other bride on page is Maria WESTWOOD).

Wow !!! What a wonderful response. I shall certainly have a look at the suggestions. I had been scouring the marriage lists for that year looking for all the Poplar 1c 1152 entries. I was going cross eyed !! No wonder I found nothing !!.Regards Brenda

Thanks Tazzie, There are so many spellings of my name that I do look at 'all' the varients. However, I am sure that Findmypast did not list the Mary Osler that you found. I have not nad too much luck with Findmypast. My first problem was finding 4 transcription errors on there from one small family unit. I don't think that I shall renew !! Regards Brenda

How odd!
I wonder (clutching at straws) whether she might be Mary's sister Maria (baptised Parham 26 Feb 1832) and the similarity of the names Mary and Maria meant it was more convenient for her to use a different name in their employer's house?

Hello Anna,
I do hope so !! It is actually Maria that I am interested in.
I have Maria (spelling OSTLER ) as a servant in Paddington in the 1861. So I think that you may well be right.
I have Maria again in 1871 (spelling OISLE !!) and I have been wondering if the 'wife' in the household was Mary (possibly the older sister of Maria) 1871 census 6 Suffolk St Poplar London Maria Oisle lodger aged 38 born Suffolk single Dressmaker Elizabeth Oisle daighter aged 1 month born Poplar Lodging with the family of William Reed Willaim Reed's wife is Mary aged 46 born Parham Suffolk. (could this be Maria's sister?) William's first wife Sarah had died in 1866
This is why I was keen to find out who the husband of Mary was.
I did find an entry for a Mary marrying a William Reed;
Marriages Sep 1870 Harvey Mary Poplar 1c 1022 (Is this Mary Orsler?) Reed William Poplar 1c 1022
However now that I know that 'my' Mary Orsler married either a Joseph Mead or Benjamin Smithers I am more unsure than ever !!
Regards Brenda

If she married Joseph Mead, he may have died almost immediately after marriage:
Death
Joseph MEAD Sep 1865 Poplar 1c 422

I actually don't think it's that far-fetched that "Jane" in 1851 is in fact Maria. I'm sure I've read in some social history of Victorian Britain that in households with several servants, it often was the case that where two shared the same or a similar given name, the younger of them (or the junior in status) had to adopt some other name so as to distinguish them. I only wish I could remember where I got that notion from
