Burial Record Lookup - 1868
« on: Thursday 19 June 08 06:02 BST (UK) »

My GGGG Grandfather George Dixon (Railway Station Master) was, according to his death certificate, accidently killed on 10 April 1868 at Newbiggin by the Sea. An inquest was held on 13 April 1868 (this is noted on the death certificate). Would someone kindly lookup the burial records for George Dixon as I am trying to locate the cemetery he was buried in.   I live in Brisbane, Australia and unfortunately the Queensland State Library does not hold these records.  If anyone knows what the local newpapers were at that time, I would also appreciate that information so I can check if there is any mention of the circumstances of his death.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Lizzie

Lizzie,

Record of the inquest, including description of the accident
( caused by bolting horses) was published in the 17 April 1868 edition of the Newcastle Courant. The heading of the article is
"MELANCHOLY DEATH OF A STATION MASTER"

George stationmaster at North Seaton station.

Newbiggin Parish Church was before it's "independence" a "chapel of ease" of the mother parish of Woodhorn. So I think George will have been buried in either Newbiggin or Woodhorn.

Lizzie,
If you haven't already seen this full account of the accident in the article Michael refers to, then you can register with newspapers online at this link http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you so much for that website link. I have downloaded the relevant newspaper article and it makes for very interesting reading. And to think it was only a few hours ago that I was pondering over George Dixon's death certificate wondering how he was accidently killed! I will definitely be keeping a record of that website for future reference.

Thanks once again

I have found masses of most useful family information there - lots of early BMD's from the 'announcements' columns, which have solved lots of little problems

I surveyed Woodhorn churchyard in 1979 but did not find a reference to him I'm afraid.
