Has anyone anything on Maxwell Clark c 1828 in the census' Kirkgunzeon Kirk.
Wife Mary Crosbie.
He maybe the son of Maxwell Clark c 1781 and Ann Nielson c 1799. These parents I cannot find in the 51 to check their birth places.
There is also a Maxwell C c 1826 s/o William and Agnes Millar but the date of birth is too far from 1828/9.
Have checked scotlands people.
Is there anywhere else I can go to search
Thanks Lis

Hi Lis
I've found a whole set of what I think is the correct family in the Kirkgunzeon MIs. Certainly quite a few Maxwell and William's are mentioned.
It will take me a little while to sort out.
Which census are you referring to -?
Regards

I have found the Clark family in the 41 with Maxwell c 1781 and son Max c 1829 and mother Ann c 1799. She is Ann Nielson but I cannot find the in the 51 so I looked for a death of Ann or Maxwell but no.
Son Maxwell who marries Mary Crosbie I have found in the 61 only when they have daughter Jane 2 mths old -correct !
But to find more about Ann I was hoping she would be alive for the 51!
So not much to go on
Thanks for your help with this

Hi
if this is the family then ~
From the MIs
Maxwell Clark, esq in Little Culmain, Urr d. 6 jan 1860 aged 81 (father was William Clark in Cowar) wife Annie Neilson, Little Culmain, Urr, d. 17 Oct 1871, aged 71 son Walter of Little Culmain d. 28 mar 1868 aged 7 months (this is what it says but something wrong with dates/ages here)
Maxwell Clark, younger of Culmain Bank, agent in Congleton, Cheshire d. 3 July 1882, aged 31
Maxwell Clark of Little Culmain d. 23 Feb 1891, aged 65. His wife Agnes Thomson d. 3 April 1902 aged 87.
John Clark d. 22 Denton Grove, Liverpool 10 Aug 1884 aged 27 - father Maxwell Clark, Culmain Brother Robert d. 13 October 1921 aged 61
The Mi is a little confused. I'll see if i can find any other records.
It would seem that they moved to Urr though.
So far there is no mention of Mary Crosbie but there's lots to plough through.

The records for children of Maxwell Clark and Ann(ie) Nielson are a wee bit sparce. I have:
15 Aug 1824 (bpt) - Elizabeth, Kirkgunzeon 12 Oct 1828 (bpt) - William, Urr
also:
marriage-
26 Oct 1850 Maxwell Clark to Agnes Thomson, Urr
also a marriage of a Mary Crosbie:
12 Dec 1851 to Thomas Watson, Urr
I can't find a marriage between a Maxwell Clark and a Mary Crosbie either before or after 1855.

Thats so great Gadget Thank you for all of that. May be I have chosen the wrong Maxwell Clark who married Mary Crosbie. I dont think so though.
He was born 1828/9 and she was 6 yrs older Mary that is.
The puzzle continues.
Thanks again Lis

To fill in some gaps for me and anyone else searching. This is the family in 1861 -
Caerlaverock, DFS 815 Ed 3 page 8-9
Maxwell Clark, 32, ploughman, b. Kirkgunzeon Mary, 38, b. Caerlaverock, James C, 12, b. Caerlaverock Jannet , 10, b. Caerlaverock Agnes M, 8, b. Caerlaverock Maxwell JC, 6, b. Caerlaverock Mary C, 1, b. Caerlaverock Jane C, 2 months, b. Caerlaverock
Given that there is a daughter Agnes and not Ann, i would think that the mother Agnes Millar should not be discounted.
John Maxwell Crosbie Clark (aged 6 on here) was b. 4 Feb 1855. It would be worth downloading his birth cert from SP as the 1855 ones give a lot more info than the others.
I'll continue the search.

I don't see a death for him - the only one showing is the one on the MI. (d. 1891, etc.) Did Mary and Maxwell move away from Dumfriesshire?
They're still there in 1871 and in 1881 (Maxwell now b. New Abbey)

Hi Lis
The 1881, 1891 and 1901 have him as b. New Abbey not Kirkgunzeon.
I think we'd best look there.

From the 1871 and 1881 census, it would seem that Mary Crosbie died in the later part of the 1860s and Maxwell married Mary Cowan sometime after 1868/9:
1871 Green Mill, Caerlaverock 815 ED 2 page 1
Maxwell, 43, labourer, b. New Abbey Mary, 34, Jane, 10 Whillhilmina, 8 Richard, 6 Mary, 1 month James Cowan, stepson, 2
all b. Caerlaverock except Maxwell
1881 Holland Bank, Caerlaverock 815 ED 3
Maxwell Clark, 53, labourer, b. New Abbey Mary Cowan or Clark, 45, labourer's wife Richard Crosbie Clark, 17, labourer, James Cowan, 12, stepson Mary Clark, 10 Joseph Cowan Clark, 7 Elizabeth Clark, 5, Edward N? Clark, 3,
all b.Caerlaverock except Maxwell
I haven't found a marriage for Maxwell and Mary Cowan yet. It might well have been a common law one

Just to bring them up to 1901:
1891
Church Road, Caerlaverock 815 Ed 2
Maxwell, 63, Ag labourer, b. New Abbey Mary, 55, grocer, b. Caerlaverock Elizabeth N, 15, b. Caerlaverock Edward N, 13, Caerlaverock
1901
815 ED 2 Bridgeend Grocer's Shop, Caerlaverock
Maxwell, 73, Grocver shopkeeper, b. New Abbey Mary, 65, b. Caerlaverock
I'll check back to the 1841 and 1851.

Another MI from Kirkgunzeon.
I think that this one is for William Clark and Agnes Millar:
William Clark d. 20 June 1853, aged 65 wife Agnes Millar d. 26 Dec 1848, aged 56 son John d. 20 June 1835, aged 15 son William d. Gateside 7 June 1869, aged 54 (wife Jean Leachman Stewart d. Terregles village 22 march 1908, aged 91) daughter Jessie d. 28 Feb 1881, aged 35 daughter Elizabeth d. Old Mill, Lohfoot 7 July 1911, aged 69 (husband James Hunter)
Erected by son Maxwell
