Esther was the easiest to find as her name is not as frequent as Mary and Robert.

She was b. Dec 27 1897 in Dennistoun, Glasgow as Esther McDougall Buchanan

Her parents were Robert Buchanan an Iron Turner (journeyman) and Letitia, maiden surname Bryan. They were married in Glasgow on 19th April 1889

We'll have to see what happened to them.

I think something might have happened - maybe the family split up.

I've found the death of an 11 month old girl, Letitia Wood OBrien or Buchanan, 21 June 1905, Dennistoun. her mother is given as Letitia OBrien, wife of Robert Buchanan, machine maker.

I'm having problems finding Robert and Letitia on the 1891 and 1901 censuses but I've got their marriage:

19 April 1889, 17 East Hill Street, Glasgow, Church of Scotland marriage

Robert Buchanan, iron turner, journeyman, bach, aged 25, living 6 Thomsons Lane, Glasgow.
Parents - William Buchanan, shoemaker and Catherine, m.s. Anderson, dec.

AND

Letitia Bryan, yarn winder, spinster, aged 22, living 6 Thomsons Lane.
Parents - James Brian, handloom weaver, dec. and Mary McLuskey, previously Brian , m.s. Bell

Nearest that I can find on the 1901 is a Robert Buchanan living alone:

15 Fairley Street, Dennistoun
644/3 ED 25 Household No. 72

Robert Buchanan, 37, sewing machine maker, b. Glasgow

It's the right age  Undecided

Thanks Monica - this family seems to split up and reform  Undecided

She was definitely alive in 1905 and was born circa 1867.

I've got a possible for Robert Buchanan in 1891 as a lodger, iron moulder in Govan but not sure.

Esther McDougall Buchanan, aged 27, a domestic servant, spinster, married David Morton, Springburn, Glasgow on 27 June 1924.

Her parents, Robert Buchanan, iron turner and Elisha m.s. Bryan,  are recorded as both deceased.

Obviously she believed this.

I'm not having much joy with The Highland Orphanage, Inverness. it opened in 1882 and was designed by the Architect Ross but that's all I'm getting.

Other hits seem to lead to this thread.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Unfortunately, I'm not in the Highlands at the moment so can't use my local info  Sad

It seems that they must have been removed from Glasgow at some stage in the 1890s - Esther after 1897 - and then boarded out with the MacIntoshes.

It's at times like these that we need Runner (Russell)   Undecided

Lara

The best that I can offer you for details of the Highland Orphanage and any records is to approach The Highland Council:

http://www.highland.gov.uk/

There are a number of contact points on this website.

meanwhile, I'll continue looking for info on your family  Smiley

I might have found Robert and his parents on the 1891 in Glasgow, Barony:

114 Canning Street, Glasgow
District 644/7 ED68 Household NO 23

Robert Buchanan, 27, gear cutter, b. Glasgow
Elisabeth, 24, b. Ireland (Letitia - Elisha - Elisabeth -also Bryan/O'Brien as m.s)
Robert, 10 mths, b. Glasgow (Census in April 1891, he born June 1890)

Parents' ages about right according to their marriage cert.

Hi there

The Highland Orphanage was located in Culduthel Road, Inverness until the late 1940s/50s. Not sure when it was established in Culduthel Road, but it was certainly in this location in 1911 according to Slater's Directory as listed on Am Baile.
http://www.ambaile.co.uk/en/item/item_page.jsp?item_id=11284

I'll have a check through a few books I have and see if I can find any further mentions.

Hope this helps!
