Hi Lara

We've been looking for William, shoemaker, and Robert and his wife but can't find them on any censuses.

I'm starting to wonder if they were Irish. They don't seem to appear on any censues that we can find.

The 1841 census is free to view as an index:

http://freecen.rootsweb.com/

It might be worth you browsing it to see if they are somewhere unusual.

Regards

Thanks Lynn for the wonderful film link. My wife's grandfather was at the Orphanage c. 1891-1900 & its great to see the place - has anyone determined if the building still exists?

You're very welcome Steve, I thought it was a cracking site too.

The orphanage is still there and is now flats, from memory I think the only part that has really changed is the doorway/entrance hall, the drive up to it is still very recognisable too, I had a drive round it a couple of months ago.

I'll go up tonight and take a few pics for you all to see.

Here's the photos I promised, hasn't really changed that much from the old movie apart from the style of cars.  Grin

Front of Highland Orphanage, 71 Culduthel Road, Inverness

Rear of Highland Orphanage, 71 Culduthel Road, Inverness - the rear area is huge, all of what you see here is part of the orphanage, plus a bit more to my left.

I've also added a link as I have uploaded a few more photos to Photobucket, any problems viewing just let me know.

Thanks Lynn

Not at all the "dark satanic mill" I had imagined!

I live in a house next to what was the "Highland Orphanage" in a modern house. My grandparents live in what I've been told was the schoolhouse and have had many friends living in the main building. All that live on the driveway are generally interested in the orphanage and it's history. Does anyone have more information? I'd be intersted in anything you could tell me.
