Hi, Could Roots Chatters help with the date of this photo. The girl on the right is my Great Aunt Rosie Turner. She was born around 1905. Middlesbrough. The other girl Lizzie Ann McNaney was her half sister, born in 1912 also in Middlesbrough. The girl/boy in the middle we don't know . It was taken at Services Studio, Middlesbrough. The problem is they all look too young to have been in the War. Was this a studio where you get dressed up like soldiers or nurses? Thank you. look forward to receiving your thoughts.

Jim, Thanks for that, you are right , there were a lot of boy soldiers. We did think the boy in the middle was George William Turner, born 1896c. Half brother to Lizzie Ann, brother to Rosie. He died in 9 Apr. 1917 France/Flanders.He was in the Yorkshire Light Infantry. He is remember on the Albert Park Memorial Wall in Middlesbrough. So maybe if the badge is recognised as the Y.L.I. it will be George, whereby the photo of them all together would make sense I will scan the photo again, but could you explain"without the scanner bed" Anne

Hello Anne,
Lizzie was born in 1912 ... George died in 1917 ... that means Lizzie was five when George died.
It's going to be difficult to date the photo ... both girls in the photo look older than five years of age.

Christopher, Yes, that's what we could not figure out. That's why we thought it wasn't George but some other relative. Bit of a puzzle. We know for sure that Lizzie Ann was born in 1912. Anne

Hello Anne,
Could the two girls have been photographed with a blow up photo of George?
I think that the photo of the girls was taken about 1922.
George's was probably taken when he enlisted in 1914 or 1915.
Services Studio may have specialised in this type of photography.

Christopher, H'mmmm. Looking at the photo again it looks like he has his hands resting on the backs of the chairs and you can just spot the skirting behind his legs. There was another brother William who was born in 1904 but we don't know if he joined up. If it is him the date fits better as he would have been between 16/18, so as you say around 1922. But still doesn't fit Lizzie Ann.
Lizzie Ann 1912, William 1904, Rosie 1905. Maybe the family have the girls mixed up, maybe it should be the other way round, although Lizzie Ann's daughter said it was "definitely" her mother on the left. Sometimes stories get mixed up through the family though. Anne

Hello Anne Could be The Green Howards as they later became known. At the time of WW1 they were called the Princess of Wales own Yorkshire Regiment.Put it up on the armed forces board & see if anyone agrees. The girls look about 12-13 & the nurses uniforms are about right for WW1. Jim

Jim, I did mention that to Lizzie Ann's daughter when she sent me the photo, that's why I thought the Services Studio was somewhere you could go to "dress up" in a uniform of your choosing. A right old puzzle this, maybe I am on a wild goose chase here. This family history research takes you all roads to find info. Anne
