Hello,
Would appreciate help please. I am trying to find a birth entry for James Dickson Archibald, son of David Johnston Archibald and Margaret/Mary Hill Dickson. I believe he was born at Linlithgow Town about 1873-1875.

The IGI has a submitted entry for 1875 with the details that you give but the ScotlandsPeople site lists the Linlithgow 1875 birth with parents James Archibald and Margaret Hodge.
Could you give details of your source information so that we could do more searching.

I see that he is on the 1881 census with parents in Edinburgh:
1 Salmond Place, St Andrew Parish
685/2 ED 31
David Archibald, 29, fireman - railway, b. Musselburgh
Margaret, 26, b. ? Stirlingshire
James, 5, b. Linlithgow
Anne, 4, b. Musselburgh
Thomas, 1,b. South Leith
Janet Dickson, vistor sister in law, 21,domestic servant, b. Edinburgh
John Dickson, B in L, 16, Apprentice Bell hanger, b. Edinburgh
Robert Dickson, under 1 month, infant - nursing , b. Edinburgh

Interestingly, sister Ann's birth is registered.
Ann Johnston Archibald - 3rd December 1876, Inveresk. On the registration document her parents marriage date was given as 31 December 1875 (checks with SP)
This seems to suggest that James was possibly born before this marriage. I did check for any James Dicksons but could not find anything that seemed to click.
The other James, mentioned in my first message, is also on the 1881 with his parents James and Margaret in Penicuik.

 Had a theory about Margaret being married before to an Alexander Callendar (with a James Dickson Callendar birth in 1873). However, I just saw on the Ancestry index that they are together in 1881!  Back to the drawing board ...

Many thanks for your replies. I realize now that I should have given more information in my first message.
Margaret Dickson married David Archibald on 31 December 1875 at 2 Romily Place, Edinburgh. I have a copy of this certificate and the parents listed for David are definitely correct. I did find the James Archibald you mentioned born 1873 Linlithgow but he was not my James.
I am inclined to think that my James Archibald was never registered at birth - he was born before the parents married. Why I mentioned he was born 1873-1875 was because.
1. 1881 census he was shown as age 5 b. about 1875/1876
2. When the family emigrated to Australia in 1885, James was shown as age
12. (b. about 1873)
3. When he died at Brisbane, Queensland in 1955 his age was 82 yrs (b. abt
1873
When he married in 1919 he gave his name as James Dickson Archibald and
stated his age as 39 yrs. which was not correct. He married Alice Snell who was 29 yrs at the time. He probably did not want to admit that he was 46 yrs.
I have been trying to find a birth entry for David Johnston Archibald born on
28 February 1882 probably at Edinburgh. His brother Thomas Dickson Archibald was born on 8 January 1880 South Leith, parents David Johnston Archibald and Margaret Dickson. The reason I have been trying to find David Johnston Archibald b. 1882 is - I believe he was registered at birth as David Johnston Archibald but when he married in Canada he gave his name as David Dickson Archibald and his death notice also shows his name as David Dickson Archibald. Would appreciate your help please.
This family did move about. They emigrated from Scotland to Quensland, Australia in 1885 and in 1898 emigrated from Australia to British Columbia, Canada.

Have found this entry on the IGI - James Oswald Dickson born 18 January 1872 at Falkirk, Stirling Mother Margaret Dickson and confirmed it with a birth entry from Scotlandspeople. James was shown as Illegitimate but I can't understand the address where he was born. Do you have access to this birth entry? Margaret Dickson was born at Stirling, Parish Falkirk and this looks like the James I have been looking for and am hoping this is the correct Margaret Dickson.
