Emma Sellwood nee Cassell death Henley
« on: Friday 20 June 08 15:23 BST (UK) »

Hello,
I am trying to find where my great grandmother, Emma Sellwood nee Cassell b 1842 died or was buried.
Her husband, Richard Sellwood died in 1907 at Harpsden Lane Henley on Thames and son Walter John was the informant.
Could someone look up the death registrations for her, please?  FreeBMD does not have it as yet.
Regards

Although it may not be transcribed, you can still VIEW (manually search) the GRO pages at freebmd.
Use the "View images" link from the main page.

Are you certain of Emma's age?

There is an Emma on 1901 census, with husband Richard and son Walter (&2 grandchildren) but she states she is 67, thus born approx 1834.

Hello Lizbd
Yes, I am sure and the 1901 that you mention is her, and I have the page, thank you.
Chr 1842 Stratfield Mortimer, 1861 age 19 1871 age 30 1881 age 40 a891 age 55 1901 67 The only thing that is consistent is the place of birth which is more than can be said for her husband, my great grandfather and his census entries.  His DOB ranges from 1829-1835 and place from Bradfield, Theale, Englefield, and in the 1901 Highfield which I think was a farm in Bradfield.
Thanks for looking, though.

Use the "View images" link from the main page.

Hello Pauline,
That is not quite true. As the heading says "FreeBMD does not presently have images available for all years and events.......We are unable to respond to queries about when any particuar year or event might become available ...."

Additonally one needs to know virtually all the details of place, year, quarter, number, before you can use this search facility. Try finding Richard Sellwood and Emma Cassell's marriage in 1859 using it and you will see what I mean. (I do have the cert)

This feature of FreeBMD is only really useful when you have already found the reference and click on the specatacles icon to view the Index page.

One can hardly compare trying to cross-reference the two parties of a marrige (pre-1911) to looking at deaths.
Images on Freebmd currently go up to 1935, which would seem to be adequate for your needs at this time, given the age at 1901.

All one has to do to go through deaths is follow the trails year by year, qtr by qtr, and then gauge how far through the surname list 'your' surname occurs. Takes maybe five minutes each qtr...

Hi

If she was only actually 59 in 1901 she could have died any time between 1901-1921 which potentially involves a 20+ years search of the BMD index

To download 4 images per year for 20 years and check each one for a death would take up a great deal of volunteers time and effort

Lengthy searches such as this are best carried out at your local library.  Many libraries also offer free Ancestry access which may help you to search online

Good luck

Vicwinann,

I've had a look at the PR transcripts for Henley St Mary and Henley Holy Trinity (courtesy of the Oxfordshire Family History Society).   There is no sign of either Emma or Richard in the burial indices.

I've also looked for Harpsden Lane on maps and can't find it (only Harpsden Way).    It is possible that they are buried at Harpsden, but the PR transcript finishes in 1878 for burials.

Hello HarryW,
Thank you for looking. The Harpsden Lane address I got from Richard's death cert.  I, too, have those transcript Fiches  but have come up with nothing.  Never mind.  I am grateful for your time.  As a disabled person I cannot travel far, so much of my research is done via my own  bought resources, the net, and search requests from record offices.  When one requests a record office search you have to be pretty sure of the details to tell them to what/where to  look, or it costs an arm and a leg.
Yours
