The only thing I could think of would be a factory or a mill of some sort.

Hello Sarah
The woman in the middle is holding a spanner with a point on one end used for lining up holes before the bolt is fitted. The woman on the left is holding a turned component possibly brass.
Looks like factory/assembly work possibly shell cases?By the look of their skirts pre WW1.
Jim
PS.
I could say the one in the middle is a well known comedienne but I wouldn't want to sound facetious. Grin

Thank you for that i thought she had a spanner as well. Didn`t occur to me it might be war work but the age would be right.
The woman in the middle is my great grandmother she looks a bit fierce doesn`t she, apparently she was some character.
Thanks again

Hi Sarah,  Smiley

The chuck key (or chuck wrench in the US) fits into a correspondingly shaped hole in the chuck. When turned it moves the chuck jaws, enabling the work piece to be gripped or released.

There are a few different designs and sizes of lathe as you can imagine.

For fast repetitive production work a "Capstan lathe" would be used and maybe with a quick release chuck.

Your lady is holding a manual chuck key though.

Lathes are mostly used for producing work of a round or cylindrical nature.

The link to the image shows a small lathe, with a three jaw self centering chuck. The hole(s) for the chuck key are at the top left of the picture on the side of the chuck.

To turn the pieces shown by the other ladies a larger lathe would be used.

Regards george

Well done George,I looked at that but couldn't make out what it was but it's obvious now.
The spanner's for rotating the turret & the woman on the right probably has a box of tool bits.
These women operate belt driven lathes. Many accidents happened with these as women got their hair caught in the machinery, thankfully these are wearing caps.
I have some old engineering books showing these lathes.
