PAXTON 1851 Bath
« on: Friday 20 June 08 23:13 BST (UK) »

Hello,
Would someone be kind enough to look up the 1851 census please. I am looking for Phoebe Paxton (birthdate unknown) She was married to Errington Paxton. Confusion reigns because I have just found a baptism for a William Palmer Paxton of Errington and Phoebe in Sept 1851 in Bath. This makes a mockery of the death that I also have of an Errington in Pershore, Worcs in 1849.

Their other daughter, another Phoebe chr 1822 London, had an illeg son, George, in Bath in 1856, and marr in Oct 1861 in Guildford, Surrey. George then took his stepfather's surname.

Errington and Phoebe's other dau, Mary Ann chr 1824, I lose after her christening. Another child, Errington Palmer Paxton, also chr 1824 died in 1825 according to the IGI.

Any help gratefully received.
Regards

I do see your problem. The birth is an extracted record on the IGI so should be accurate.  Not sure when the birth year was - this was a baptism record. Can't see him on the 1861 census

The entry on the 1841 contains all the names you mention but there is no Errington, only an Edward age 50

Hello Tricia,

Thank you for that. The mystery deepens.
I found the baptism of William Palmer Paxton, son of Errington and Phoebe on the IGI.  Bath St Saviour.  It could be an adult baptism, of course, which might explain things.  No, I don't have any of the family in 1841. I would be grateful for what you have found.
Yours

Please bear in mind that this is all the information that the 1841 records. No relationships are recorded which is a great pity in this case.

Can't find any Erringtons or any more Phoebes in Bath or anywhere else that might fit

1841

Picton Street Bristol St James and St Paul's,

I have pasted this to show strange order as though Edward may not be husband to Phoebe or maybe they entered males first and then females for some reason. Slightly odd

Thanks Tricia,
Also thank you for the answers you have given me on the Surrey Rootschat about Leighs. I seem to have got hold of the Leighs/Paxton handle but there are a lot more questions I need to answer. Yes, both families are leading me a merry dance.

As you say, a weird order of individuals in 1841 for the Paxtons. At the moment, I am not quite sure what to make of it.  A bit more research, I think.

What I have just found in the last hour in copies of the 1824 London Gazette and  the 1843 Jurist on line is that Errington Paxton was a builder and in 1843 lived in Long Ashton Somerset.  I have also found his wife. Phoebe's baptism, parents, and three siblings on the IGI thanks to the birthdate on the 1851 that you sent. Again, many thanks.
Yours

Dear Vicwinnan
Phoebe Paxton nee Claridge was the sister of my my gt gt grandfather William.  She had three sisters Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary and two brothers William and John.  I can tell you all I know about the Clarridge's if you wish.  Regarding Phoebe's marriage to Errington, I believe they had six children, Phoebe, Errington, Mary, Isabella, Ellen and William.  Phoebe's husband Arthur Leighs had a very colourful life and I have quite a bit of information from a descendant of his sister if you would like it.

Hello Teddy 2,
Thanks for your message. I am interested in the Paxtons/Claridges. I don't have a brother John for Phoebe Claridge but I do have William. Anything that you are prepared to share I would welcome.

I would like anything that you have on Phoebe Paxton's husband - I think you meant Alfred, not Arthur Leighs. However, I suspect that much of it may have originated with me, anyway. I am a descendant of his sister's.   Have we been in touch before on a different forum?
