Thorpe - baptism c1805-09? - Charles Thatcher
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 09:26 BST (UK) »

Hello
I'm trying to locate the baptism of my OH's 3g grandfather Charles Thatcher.

In 1841 census of Merton he gives his age as 32
In 1851 census of Wimbledon he is 42 and says he was born in Thorp(e)
I don't have him on the 1861 or 1871 but the IGI has him on 1881 in Wimbledon as age 76 (but still born in Thorp!)

I haven't been able to trace his death on Free BMD either.  The closest one is in Kingston in 1895 at age 95 but that would put him being born in 1800.

Can anyone help?

1861 confirms Thorpe ..... but the Enumerators page has Hampshire ..... 1871 again Thorpe, and back to Surrey.

Age the same as earlier years ......

RG9/454; Folio: 109; Page: 16 - Wimbledon
4, Devonshire Cottages

and Ann is more specific - Tottenham Court Road....

Thank you for the 1861 info.

Is Tottenham Court Road anywhere near St. Pancras? - that's what wife Ann said in 1851.   There is a marriage Dec 18, 1831 between Charles Thatcher & Ann Pearson in Merton Surrey that might be theirs.  Can't find Ann's baptism yet either.  I wondered if she was a widow - according to the 1841 she was seven years older (age 39 to his 32).

Yes TCR is quite close ....... I saw the Pearson marriage in Merton and wondered the same thing about her status..... she is consistantly that much older.

Its strange that hes not in the IGI. Thorpe is there from 1802 ....

Possibilities are that he's actually older than he says (pre-1802 ? ) or he used another christian name ?

It's all a bit odd really  Grin    If he was older - say born 1800 why keep saying he is younger than his wife on the censuses - just doesn't add up somehow.   Undecided

Just a quick note to add that I think I may have found the baptism of Ann Pearson in Islington Nov 1801 on the IGI - right age certainly - now just have to find her death/burial.
