Thank you so much for the latest on this unusual name of 'Fethon'. I have recently found it can also be FETHAN.
Someone remarked way back (after I had remarked I had tried in vain to contact the HULL Fethons) that it was a pity they were not interested in Geneaology.
Well times have changed of late. They have been in touch with me and indeed are now interested and starting a tree.
Still no idea why my Grandmother, Elizabeth Fethon Jack was given this name.  However, I have a strong suspicion  it was her mother, Margaret Jack ms GEORGE who was the person responsible here.
I have searched for years trying to find the parents of my ggrandmother Margaret George. All I know of them is what is written in the marriage certificate at Margaret's wedding to James Jack, Glasgow 1973.
She gives her parents as William George (Boatbuilder) and Margaret ms McCrea. On Margaret's death certificate it states parents William George (Shipwright) and Margaret McRea.
Daughter Margaret was born Edinburgh 1853
I have now come to the concusion if ever I find who these people were and where they came from I will  find there is a connection of one of them to the FETHON family whom, by one of the birth dates were indeed living in Glasgow around the same time.
I have searched Scotlandspeople inside out and can find no records of William and Margaret George.
I stongly suspect they could not have been Scottish or I would have found them by now.
If anyone has access to any records of a William George and Margaret McCrea being in Edinburgh in 1853 I would be delighted to hear from you.

Our great Aunt who died as a toddler was called Flantan (it is spelt Flantain on the census, but we think the name is Flantan).
We think the name is Irish meaning 'Red Rose'.
Anyone else ever heard of this?

Postumus was used by the Romans when a baby was born after his father died, could be difficult to be born after you mother died, but not impossible.

I discovered a whole new line of family after I saw my great great grandfather called his son John Blagg Rollinson, after his mother's maiden name (I don't mean to Blagg about this)

However I did follow what I thought was a promising trail - I thought that Frederick Bolton Thompson married to Elizabeth Lay Vowles could have been my great greats whatever but it is not so.  It seems a shame since I was born in Bolton and would have loved a Lay Vowles in the family (might have improved my scrabble game).

Lots of Lays in Berkshire I discovered but not for me!

I have one causing me particular problems at the moment.  My gr gr grandmother is called Helena Lorraine Lovekin Stamford Smith, I don't know which one is the surname because I have found her in one census as Lorraine Smith.  My dad remembers her as being granny Lorraine Lovekin and on another census she was Helena Stamford.

Perhaps she was actually as confused as me!! Roll Eyes

Hi Jocie

Have you any connections with far-flung lands?  The Loris is a solitary mammal that lives in tropical rainforests in southeast Asia...maybe one of your ancestors was a bit of a traveller?

Thanks Bel!
I don't usually own up to the Loris bit! As you can imagine it generates a fair ammount of  light hearted comment!! I'm frequently offered the night shift!!
Unfortunately the family were so attached we've all ended up with it as part of our surname.
I just can't imagine where it came from. Like most families there were a lot of surnames used as middle names but I've failed to locate a Loris anywhere.
Travelling seemed to be limited to war service, however I shall keep hunting!
