I've become totally peeved with a couple of gt grandfathers who refuse to be found ... so I've gone back to the drawing board, and started on the mother-in-law's side of the family ... but ...

Did China keep any sort of records at all during the 1800s???  And if they did, ... should one assume that they wouldn't be available ... and most certainly not, online?

ahh ha . Shocked Shocked one should never assume anything in this world of family research . i am studying/searching in China for my family .1860-1935. i am not sure if you are searching for actual Chinese which might be different . i have found my relations in graveyards ,on ships going around the world and also have got very full infomation in regards wills and court actions . I wrote to the Chinese embassy in shanghai and they told me that all the English orientated infomation had been sent back to the archivesin England and this is where i have found the info. of course this might be all different if they are Chinese . i just goggle and put name and china. very successful. give me a pm and i will try and help.
