How to identify the right person?
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 12:24 BST (UK) »

Just a quick question.....whats the best way to try and identify if the person you have found is the right one?  i.e. what if you have someone of the same name, born in the same or nearby location around the same time?  Whats the best approach to verify who is the right one?!

Thanks

Very hard to answer this question as each case is different. I've come across people (related and unrelated) with same names and nearly same birthdate living in the same area and it can be difficult enough to untangle which is which.

A lot of Register Offices will actually do a check for you by email.
For instance if you are looking for a birth, and have several possibilities within the same area, tell them the father and mother's names and they will check for you and give you an idea of which is the appropriate one.
I have done this many times, also for marriages and deaths, in Durham and Northumberland and have found the register offices most helpful in nearly all cases.

Brothers and sisters on censuses matching up to one or more of the witnesses on someones marriage cert is a big help  Grin

Fathers name and profession as shown on a marriage cert-and the person themselves job or exact address is often the clincher too.

If you have someone you'd like a second opinion on, post their name here- unless it's so recent that they may still be alive.

All the best

Hi Victoria

This has been a very common occurrence in my experience.  I have at least 3 occurrences where I have more than one say, Joe Bloggs born 1785 in the same village.

By careful, methodical research you sometimes can find out which is which.  Often the clues are in census returns or other information you are able to find such as a will or trade directory.  Try to find links to siblings, or other people.  Exactly as Carol says.  Its all a matter of looking at the possibilities and ticking each one off.

Good luck and enjoy the search  Cheesy
