Hi,
I'm trying to find the birth/baptism of John Frederick Messenger c.1820 He married Rosina Maria Brown in Lambeth in 1842 and spent the rest of his life in Bermondsey.
He gives Bermondsey as his birthplace on the census but I can find no matches on the IGI for him. His marriage certificate shows his father as John Messenger, a labourer who had died before the marriage took place.
Any help gratefully received. Bones

Hello, Bones,
No luck in finding a birth/bapt for John Frederick Messenger, I'm afraid but there may be a way of finding his parent's names if you would take a chance on a birth cert.
I looked at the 1841 census for John & found that he was with, I presume, an elder brother, Samuel b c 1810, & siblings Anna age 16, Louisa age 4, James age,2. John was 23 making him b c 1818. It was piece no Ho107/1048 bk 3 folio 15 pages 23 & 24. Is this correct ? I also found him with Rosina & children in the 1851 census.
Seeing that James the youngest sibling was only 2 it seemed possible that his birth may have been registered, also that of his sister Mary Ann. I found these.
Birth James Messenger June ¼ 1940 Bermondsey 4 7 Mary Ann Messenger Dec ¼ 1838 Rotherhithe 4 7
Rotherhithe is adjacent to Bermondsey. I then looked for a death for father John as you say he died before the marriage of son John in 1842. I found this which ties in with the place of birth for Mary Ann.
Death John Messenger Sept ¼ 1839 Rotherhithe 4 250.
Hope this is of some use.

Hi Meliora,
You have found the right family OK.
I read Anna' age as 26 and assumed that she was Samuel's wife and that the children were theirs. I found a Samuel, Ann and Louisa in 1851, living in Tower Hamlets, which I think is the same family. There is however a big difference in Ann's age, as she is now 54.
On the census Samuel gives his birthplace as Norwood, whereas John always gives his as Bermondsey. I may have to try there for a baptism.
I may go for the death certificate for John in 1839 as it might show a wife as the informant.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi Meliora,
The Southwark baptism looks promising but it's a pity you couldn't find Samuel as that would more or less have confirmed the parents. I'm just about to order the death certificate for John in 1839 and am hoping that it might give some clues.
