Hi

Have you found him on the 1881 census which is free to search at www.familysearch.org or www.ancestry.co.uk

It's taken ages to find this - is this him?

Sarah the daughter was born in the United States

Hi

It would have been helpful if you had included that info in your message as both Tricia and I have spent a lot of time trying to find him

Re: his birth - You give 1849 but he was 40 in 1891 so you need to spread your search - have you checked the following websites

www.familysearch.org (IGI)
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

If you cannot find him on those websites then you will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library if you live in the UK.  It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

You will find his marriage on freebmd transcribed as Gilgrose and I suspect that the Mary on the 1891 census was his second wife.

The 1866 marriage in Pontypridd shows 2 possible spouses - Harriet Taylor and Ann Beynon.  As the 1891 shows a lodger called David Beynon - my money's on Ann being his first wife

A copy of his marriage cert in 1866 will at least give you his fathers name

If you have all information except birth do you have him on the 1901 and if so what is his age - there is a 10 year discrepancy at the moment and it will take some considerable time to check the birth records over that amount of time. Do you know when he died and his age at the time.

When you say you can't find his birth where have you looked?

have done check and he was back about 1876 . have looked in1837 to 1900 births. have his father and all his brothers. have him 1870 USA says he cannot read or write .so i think he must have been guessing his age on different census.they even spelt his name killgress  on 1870 census have had lots of trouble with gillgrass name . spelt gilgrass  gilgrafs gillgrafs and other funny ways so have had lots of hard work tracing my family . thank both of you for all the help and time you have spent hope we can sort this Richard out regards haydon
