David Laurie & Mary McDowall marry in Co Down 1807
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 17:22 BST (UK) »

These are my ggg grandparents and all I can find out is that they were married 1807 in Downpatrick, I'm a protestant so assume they were the same. They had a son Robert born 1808 then nothing till my gg grandfather Alexander born Kilmarnock,Ayrshire, Scotland 1/10/1821, some time gap, I would think there will be other offspring but can't find any, found this site today and hope there may be someone out there who  can help or at least point me in the right direction. I also have a g grandfather who came from Co Down born approx 1842, he was a Joiners carter and I would like to find out more about him also, it has been great to find out I'm off Irish stock, the rest of my cousins have been quite shocked as they assume we were Scottish through and through.
Thanks a lot

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Just a cautionary note re: the IGI entries.

Both Roberts birth and the marriage of David and Mary are submitted entries, not extracted records,  which can be very unreliable.  A submitted entry indicates that somebody else is researching the same family so the details are somebody else's perception of the ancestry

You will note that no precise details are given re: dates and the surname is spelt Lawrie

The IGI entry for Alexander is also a submitted entry but has an actual birthdate

Unless he eventually settled in England, Scotland or Wales, you will need to post his  full details (especially his name)  on the appropriate Irish board

I've traced through my family lines to Alexander and his birth is on Old Parish Records for Kilmarnock 597/0072 0063 which says David Lawrie and Mary McDowal are the parents, as for the name spelling there are several ways this appears to be spelt depending on who was writing down the name. Sorry if I'm on wrong forums maybe you could tell me which ones I should be on, as for my other great grandparent his name was David Gilmour from Co Down as previously stated.
Once again thanks for assistance

Rootschat have a message board for County Down in their Irish section so you may be able to get some help by posting on it.  (By the way - no mention of the name David Gilmour in your opening message)
