Can anyone tell me if the person or persons applying for Letters of Administration in respect of someone who died intestate had to be in some way related to the deceased?
With the help of Berks Archives, I've managed to locate an admon for my ancestor William Silver who died in 1737 in Hurley. The applicants are his widow Mary Silver and a Joseph Mason, yeoman, although the body of the document has just Mary, the widow, doing the claiming.
I never managed to find the marriage of William Silver and Mary (have tried Bucks, Berks & Oxon incl. FHS name searches) so am hoping that this Joseph Mason might be a clue to Mary's identity.
Or is he just likely to have been an official?
