Hi Does anyone have access to Jevington church records? John Gatland/Gatlin, miller of Jevington, married Ann Reede a widow by licence in May 1639. I have the marriage and licence details from the SMI but would like to discover who his parents were, what happened to them and what Ann's maiden name was. I am trying to see if this is the John "Gatlin" who went to America and had a son William there in 1642. If they were having other kids here or were buried locally then obviously that cuts him out! One of the sponsors for the licence was Richard Gatland of "Gawdhurst" Kent. There are numerous submitted entries for Gatland on familysearch but all seem a bit "iffy" to me! Thanks Andrea

Thanks Jane. I always forget about that site! I have looked now and cannot find suitable Reed burials in the right time frame. No burials for John and Ann either. Better look for baptisms too - should keep me busy this evening - in between cooking roast pork! Andrea

I have Gatland ancestry and have copies of some of Combers Sussex Genealogies for the Gatland families. Will check these tonight and see if your John shows up. There are the printed books as well as the handwritten stuff held at WSRO.

Hi Ian I have copies of the printed book ones but not the hand written stuff. Edward Gatland was a clockmaker in Cuckfield and many of his clocks still survive so an interesting man to research but there is another "wealthier" family who lived at Pilstye and Nymans. I have had a query from someone in America who is sure his family descend from a John born 1816 in Cuckfield, son of Gerard. There is no John baptised in Cuckfield at that time - though there is one earlier so I am wondering if he has the wrong line. It also seems a little unlikely that a John from Cuckfield would marry in Jevington and the tree goes on to claim a birth for Ann Reede in Bosham in 1609 - whereas she was a widow therefore Reede was probably not her maiden name. I have some Gatland wills also if they are of interest to you. Where are your Gatlands from? Andrea

The "Wealthier" lot! They did move around a lot didn't they? Perhaps Jevington is not too far away. Andrea
